This post is an experiment on many levels. 1) The photo is of a friend's mare shot in mid-day sun yesterday with the new Tamron f/2.8 70-200mm lens (Christmas present from a very kind hubby). 2) The computer is one I'm still not comfortable with but has replaced the one that crashed in August. 3) My editing software is Elements 13, purchased a while ago, but it's also still out of my comfort zone. New Year, new toys, new struggles. I had planned to get through some of these challenges a year ago. What can I say? I procrastinated. So here I am, almost ready to see how far I can throw the computer before I look for a new hobby.

Beautiful horse with shiny coat and mane. We'd miss you if you found another hobby!

No, no, no, Vicki don't throw away your computer (or camera) I think these ar very nice horse shots. They show great definition of the horses muscle tone in every shot.

You're very kind infocus. You have know idea how frustrated I've been or how much sleep I've lost trying to make the computer cooperate. I feel like the proverbial dumb blonde. Little by little the technology is becoming less daunting, but about the time I shall start to get some confidence, the program will be upgraded, and the process will start over again. Good mental exercise? Maybe. Hopefully. I'd like to think so.

All your problems with new lens, computer, etc didn't seem to bother the horse. Sounds like Windows 10 withdrawal syndrome. Don't worry, if I can get it, you surely can. Just a nick off focus. Might be a lens adjustment??? Your shots are always worth a second look. djt

You give me too much credit. No, not Windows 10. Try XP with a Dell "Jasc" editing software and make a jump to a Macbook Pro with Elements 13. I think the softness was the short dof (2.8). I'm going to try again today with some longer dof settings.

Thanks for the visit and input. I appreciate it.

Nice shots Vicki. I have that lens, and it took some experimenting. I agree with you on the weight and I usually use a tripod with a gimbal head because I just can't seem to be steady enough for crisp sharp images.

Good stop action...you'll have everything mastered soon!!

At f/2.8, the shutter speed was 1/8,000. That's enough to stop something...maybe I should try my hummingbirds...hmmm. I need to focus on watching more tutorials and playing with different tools on the editing software instead of reading novels or watching mind-numbing TV sitcoms.

The Macbook Pro is a great choice. Especially good for PP work.

#2 looks like the focus might have been on the fence. f/2.8 is extremely shallow depth of field, so assuming the horse was willing to keep going round and round, I'd have backed off that 1/4000 sec, and tried to get more dof. Panning with the horse going across in front of you like that is a difficult challenge in itself!

Exposure and pp look good. You are a determined, courageous woman to take on all those challenges at once

I agree. I have this new dof potential to try out, but this was the wrong application for it. As to all of the challenges...taking them on all at once was out of necessity rather than desire. It's a wonder I haven't pulled out all of my hair! In this situation, it's not a matter of learning all of it bit by bit. You almost have to tackle a lot at once. Now, after seeing some Photoshop tutorials, I'm thinking maybe I should just take the plunge and go with the Photoshop. It looks like there's a lot more you can do with it than Elements, but I'm afraid to take on another challenge. My photos aren't arranged well on the hard drive either. That's one of my biggest frustrations. The files look like I am a hoarder who has thrown everything into one huge pile where nothing can be found. Argh! I'm tempted to copy the files I want to keep to an external hard drive or site, delete all of the others from the computer, and start over.

Sorry to vent Linda. I do appreciate your visit and thoughts. Many thanks.

These are sufficiently sharp Vicki to have good eye appeal. That's the cardinal virtue. They all show action.
Also, and most important, they are all practice, practice, practice.

A tip of the hat to Santa

Thanks Pierre. I think I'll be able to stop the action well enough with a longer dof. The trouble is, it's sometimes hard to tell how good the focus is (or isn't) until you get the photos up on a larger screen. Back to the drawing board.

Santa was most generous. Of course there was a wish list involved. BTW Santa may be back in your area next week after just getting back from NZ where it's summer. I don't know how he does it. He thrives on stress and little sleep.

Thanks Corkey. What I really need is a tutor, or at least someone to come in and clean up my files and point me in the right direction. The Elements software is easy enough to use. It was during the import and filing that I got horribly lost.

Thanks for taking time to look and comment Sylvia. I'm pleased you enjoyed these. We've had drought conditions the last couple of years, so no one is complaining about the inconvenience of dealing with mud. We're just happy to have rain.

These look beautiful to me, Vicki, in spite of the challenging conditions. The direct sunlight certainly brings out the brilliant shine in the mare's coat. Learning new equipment and especially new software can be a nightmare. I'm trying to learn Lightroom but so far haven't managed to get further than the library.

IMO, they're quite nice shots, Vicki. There's always a learning curve, it seem, in trying to master new software. I'm trying to learn Elements too.
