I recently switched from Tirerack to Discount Tire Direct - a lot cheaper.[/quote]

If you have one close, try COSTCO. Been buying all our tires there for a buncha years - friendly, knowledgeable, accommodating. (disclaimer - Not associated with COSTCO other than periodically leaving $$$ there.)

I also have a Honda Fit, has new tires, but they're not snow tires. Just curious if snow tires will make that much difference, (never driven it in much snow, but we live in Rochester and might get some this winter...)

All weather tires are called No weather tires by the guys I drive with.
The reason is obvious. They can't handle the heat and don't have the same traction in the summer.
Winter: can't handle the cold and don't have the good traction in snow.

The treads are different on all three tires. Summer, winter and All weather.
The "rubber" formula is different for all three also.

Tires are very important. Most folks take them for granted.

The UPS driver could have done what the Fedex driver did to us a couple of years ago. There was about an inch of snow on the ground and rather than do house to house to deliver the packages, he parked down the road at the local market and called every one to get their stuff there. There was about 20 or 30 of us, believe we all filed a complaint.

We live in the Adirondack Mountains, LOTS of snow. We were tight for funds two years ago and needed new snow tires for one of the cars. Bought a set of studded General Altimax Arctic from Discount Tire Direct. These are great tires at a bargain price! They are on an awd Equinox and they turned that car into a go anywhere winter tank! And they are wearing extremely well. Something I have found out over time is that when you shop for winter/snow tires, look for ones with a directional tread. If the manufacturer can concentrate on traction and not have to make the tires perform in both directions, they work better in snow. They will be louder, and they will wear slightly faster, but they are truly the safest bet in winter.

Best advice I've gotten about drinking in the snow: Don't!
If you must, drive slower than you think you should and leave plenty of room between cars. Beware of people driving large SUVs. Many of them think those cars are immune to snow/ice conditions. Wrong!

Don't drink yellow snow.

In our neck of the woods, anyone above 1,500 feet has to have chains in their car! Failure to have them is a big fine!

If y'all are driving front wheel drive cars, remember that snow tires have (well, should) be on the rear wheels too.

Yep! All four.

We live at the thousand foot level and VERY seldom get any snow. In the ten years we have lived here, only had one snowstorm that knocked out power for about a week.

@ Jeep Daddy - My 5th grade son had always heard us talk of yellow snow, but had never seen any. About an hour ago, he went out and made some by the pine tree; came back with a big grin on his face...

And many times you even have to get them out of the trunk and put them on, especially in the Donner pass.

I did not read all the replies to your question, so this may have been addressed already. I think (I live in Wisconsin) the most important aspect you want to look for in a snow tire is the "shoulder sipe". First of all I said snow tire, there is a difference in a snow tire and an all weather tire. In either one look for the sipe I mentioned; that is where the tread on the shoulder of the tire is left open in such a manner as to leave an escape route for the snow. As the tire travels over the snow it packs into the tread and the open channel on the shoulder of the tire (sipe) allows the snow to be expelled from the tread. This is a good reason for you to do business with a reputable tire dealer. Ask them to show you what I just described, they will be glad to. Good luck and drive safely......
