I've been thinking about macro photography recently and your super close up requires me to ask some questions:

1. Are you using a 1:1 lens? what mm?
2. To get that close, do you have one of those ring flash attachments, if not how did you light the nipple ?
3. What f stop did you use for the shot.

Thanks.

If anything I'm thinking this was posted in the wrong section,
would maybe qualify as Macro photography ?

Well, thank you then.

Canon 100 2.8 macro lens.
F-stop f5.0
I dont have any ring flash attachments for macro photography. I don't like how it looks in pictures where it is used. I normally use a reflector if I need to direct light to my subject outdoors. Indoors I use one off camera flash. At least until now I have never used 2 flash units or studio lights.

For this photo: About 6' from my subject I set up a 600w (about 1/3 power) studio light with a beauty dish, the stand was probably 6' high. I aimed the light away from the model and into the spot where the ceiling and wall meet, which was about another 6' or so. I used my histogram to check for exposure. So the light was bounced from the spot it was directed to (about 12' from the model), and then spread all over the room and finally back to the model.

Thank you TheStarvingArtist, I really appreciate the information. You put more light prep into the shot than I thought. Your result was perfect. Thanks again.

I see, I try to do that in most of my photos. Have you read the posts where people say they do not want a photo that tells a story? There is no story or dramatic lighting here. I wonder why none of those people commented that I finally succeeded in not telling a story?

The expression, "a picture is worth a thousand words," came from somewhere, and I believe it, and I like it (OK, maybe only 500 words at times; precise numbers don't matter). If there is no message in a photo it serves no purpose. The message may be more of a feeling than a story per se, and it will invoke different responses in different viewers, but it has to move the viewer in some way to be meaningful and enjoyable. While some of your contributions may have been a challenge to understand, at least there were stories to tell or emotions and feelings being stirred. I, too, am surprised that the "photos don't tell stories" crowd has not applauded this contribution. In any case, keep on creating!

When viewed closeup as this, there's nothing sexy about it. In fact, this texture is like fingernails on a blackboard to my ears. Yes, it's interesting, but it looks like a monster i.e. The Blob!

Hard to believe that it can provide nourishment to a child.

Looks like raw hamburger.

This nipple looks abused lol ... Almost looks detached. The vignetting on the bottom cause the lower part to be out of focus ... detracting from the idea it's a nipple. If this was posted without a title it would take awhile to decide it was a nipple. Interesting shot though ... I like your other nipple shots better.

Interesting shot. I still don't understand why a woman would want to stick a pin through it?

I asked some of the girls in the adult video business which was the most painful of all the pin jobs that they had done.
I was told it was their nipples.
I thought it might be someplace lower. I was wrong.

Interesting, I would have thought like you: lower.

Given the choice of an pierced nipple or a natural nipple, put me down for natural.

I don't think this extreme close up captures the real beauty of a female breast / nipple. It's very clinical and without surrounding reference, I would not immediately grasp what it was ... but it's fun to experiment ... keep up the intriguing posts!
