I have a D810, D500, D750 and a D800. I use and like them in the order presented.

You do not mention what you prefer to shoot. I own the d750 and the d500, and I like them both, but for different reasons and shooting preferences. The d750 is great for stills, portraits, and landscape. The d500 cannot be beat for the price for action, sports, wildlife and birds in flight. If you already own DX lenses, I would opt for the d500. If you own FX lenses, the choice would be in what you like to photograph. Maybe you could set a goal of owning both in the future.

This is the best advice you are going to get and to which I concur, owning both.

I have both and wouldn't part with either, each has their strengths and they complement each other very well. I had the D750 and bought the D500 and am well pleased. Were I to choose only 1 it would be the D750 based on how I typically shoot, and I have more FX lenses, but I'm delighted to be able to have both.I=jaf647]Opinions wanted: torn between the two. I want the super fast autofocus. build, and button layout of the D500 with the full frame sensor of the D750.

Which did/would you choose and why?

Thanks - probably a subject that's been beaten to death.[/quote]

Based on the description of what you're looking for, sounds like a D5 or a D4s.

I have both and love them but if I could only have one it would be the D500. Whatever you shoot landscape, portrait, action or low light I'd go for the D500. It is not only an action camera. 10 fps makes it an obvious action camera choice but the low noise and image quality puts it alongside the D750. Pixel peepers may claim otherwise but in real life it would be a hard choice to know which image came from which camera.

I read an article a few days ago that Nikon plans to release its new D760 sometime in 2017. It was quoted as a rumor. But who knows?

It is always possible to wait the the next generation of a potential product. Addressing your question of D750 or D500, which is better? Well that depends upon how you use the camera. Regularly shoot with three different bodies: D500; D4s; and D800e and I love all three for different uses. For landscapes it is hands down my D800e along with a solid tripod. I use both the D4s and D500 for birds and wildlife. One with think that with a D4s why would one ever consider dropping back to a DX format camera. Well, when I want the long reach without much cropping my go to camera is the D500. I love the fast focusing and the long reach. I normally couple the D500 with a Nikon 200-400 plus a 1.4 extender. I have great success hand holding this set up. For long reach and significant cropping I use my D4s with a Nikon 600mm plus a 1.4 or 1.7 extender. This set up works well only with a tripod and gimbal head.

Wait for the D760. A mini D5. Will be out in early 2017.

Jim Bob's response is unfortunate as we are here to learn and share. If you knew the answer you would not have asked the question.

We all have our areas of expertise, let's be kind and helpful. Sarcasm and belittling have no place here.

Yes, I have been torn between the D500 and D750 (a D5 is out of budget for many enthusiasts, not to mention a behemoth) In fact NPhoto magazine did a comparison test between the two cameras a couple months back. The D750 had the slight edge in terms of low-light handing (lowest noise figure at given high ISO). They also pointed out the benefits of FF vs APS-C in terms of IQ. BUT, the APS-C D500 has benefits too....for action photography, BIF, etc. Also the D500 handles noise very well, probably due to the 20 MP sensor vs. 24 MP for other APS-C sensors in the current line - somewhat larger photo-sites = better noise figures.

My final decision is to START with the D500 BUT invest in FX lenses, so that when I add an FX camera both bodies can be used interchangeably. The use of FX lenses on the DX body also has some IQ benefits too. Especially too, I don't plan to shoot in low light/ interiors too much with supplemental lighting.

I think it should be FF + APS-C not FF vs. APS-C, even for PROS. But if you had to choose one to start with, choose the one that goes with your genre of photography, budget and existing lenses (if any)....note there is much overlap too.

Landscape (esp ultra wide angle), low-light interiors, weddings, general -> FX
Action, BIF, sports, extra telephoto reach (1.5x) without using a TC (so you don't need a $20,000 1000mm f/2.8 monster), general -> DX
Investment in DX lenses existing -> DX

In my case, I have a D4s, D500 and D750. I do a lot of wildlife and landscape. For wildlife, there are advantages of a cropped sensor and the combination of full frame and c sensor gives me great choices for lens setups. I turned to the D750 after giving up on the D610 because of sensor crud. The D750 has U1 and U2 mode settings that I like. I do a lot of bracketed shots when I'm doing landscape but also switch a lot to aperture and manual so I have U1 set for HDR bracketing. I don't do a lot of printing or commercial work so the D810 isn't that big a deal for me and it doesn't have the U1 and U2 settings. On a recent trip, I was in a location with both wildlife and landscape so I had the D500 and D750 set up in the car and had the D500 and not the D4s because of the lens set-up I wanted for this location. And the D750 was set up for landscape.

I seldom use a wide angle wider than 28mm and I usually do landscape with a 28 to 300 lens as I don't like to change lenses and find I do a better job working a scene with one all purpose lens. And if I have to hike, I carry less weight than having multiple lenses. The major issue for using a C sensor for landscape is shooting wide. Nikon makes a DX version of the 28 to 300 which is 18 to 300. So given my shooting preferences and if I had to choose one camera, I would go with the D500 and get the DX 18 to 300 lens. That way, I would have wildlife and landscape covered.

I'm not you and don't know what types of photography you'll be doing.

How much would you take for your D4s?

But wouldn't the D5 can focus and shoot faster than even the D500 and has full size sensor? The OP didn't talk about money.

Maybe it's that Nikon is negotiating to buy out Canon's camera division. The plan being as follows:

Immediately phase out all Canon bodies in favor of their Nikon equivalents.

Introduce "C" Model Nikon bodies (e.g. D810 C) that will have Canon Lens mounts and be functional with Canon accessories where possible. This will enable current Canon users invested in Canon glass to use their lenses on superior Nikon bodies.

Offer current Nikon lenses with Canon mounts and discontinue all Canon glass other than some "L" glass deemed up to Nikon standards. Offer those lenses with Nikon mounts too.

Gradually phase out support for Canon hardware over 10 years to allow current users time to shift to the Nikon system.

Just think of how UHH will be when Canon is just a distant memory like Exacta and Practika - the forum will probably save a bazillion bytes of storage space from the lack of the Canon-Nikon rivalry!

Merry Christmas!
