Your picture is very nice.... I just use my cell phone. And I have a few that I think are pretty darn good. But, that's my opinion. I love trying to capture the perfect picture. i have very few that comment on them. But I have a couple people that are very encouraging... so I keep snapping away.
Merry Christmas !

Well cell phones are have overtaken all camera manufacturers in sales and in a big way. I'm talking sales in the millions. Cell phones are a new technology but are no different than using a camera. One must have a good subjects and know good composition skills. I do know that some manufactures are working to make small sensors surpass FF sensors in quality. It's in the works and will happen given time...they're getting close even today.

James, don't take them so seriously. My observation is that people who spend lots of time focusing on gear don't spend nearly so much time focusing on worthwhile subjects in a worthwhile fashion.

I can't afford to take them seriously, but there is truth in the IQ of high dollar cameras. I just can't afford going that route, so I'm on a journey to do the best with a cheap camera. And I want to encourage others that you too can get great photos on a budget. They just won't be on a billboard...

Wait wait wait! Do you mean that all those guys in the main photography section are wrong? They can't be. There are too many of them telling us that you have to shoot in raw and they also say that white balance settings don't matter in raw either. And now here you come along. I am selling everything. I will just go to the craft shows and buy my photos from now on.

Oh, and by the way, on a serious note; I just sold a photo of mine shot in Jpeg using an APS-C 24mp sensor camera (Sony A77 ll) using a mediocre lens (Sigma 18-250mm). I got $1.250.00 for it. I was asking $1,300.00. And guess what I did in post? All I did was to crop it and use the high pass filter at 2 pixels for sharpening. That's it. Everything else was done in camera. It is now on a billboard out west somewhere. All the advertising agency had to do was size it for the billboard and not much else on their end.

I am going back to a point & shoot and set it in auto. That way, I won't have to worry about anything.

Nice photo, by the way! Just go easy on the HDR. Uh, oh! Did I just start another argument. Ha, ha, ha, ha ha!

Missed you, my friend!

Hey Man, good to hear from you...hope your back is healing up fine. I see you've been reading those posts too. Listen, I don't mean anything negative by what I'm saying. After all the talk about how great super expensive camera gear is, I just wanted to give us poor folks some hope. I read those posts and cried...they made me want to give up. I did quit taking photos for awhile. But I told myself, screw em...I'm not giving up. As far as the HDR, I'm getting better I hope...HDR in my opinion out does standard processing simply because there's more range visible in the photo. Still, I need to find the sweet balance between shadows and bright areas...but I'm getting there. Wonderful news, my KC daughter will be traveling to be with me for Christmas. It's been 9 years since she was last here. You may ask, what took her to long...she keeps changing jobs and losing her vacation time. But I'm stoked she's coming. Take care, now...probably won't be posting much till I get that RX10III. Oh, and congradulations on your photo sale. That's impressive. All I have is a wall of award winning photos but none bring that kind of cash.

When she shows up, enjoy the moment. We were bumming over here because Julie and I had a big birthday party planned for my youngest daughter on Saturday and the weather did not cooperate. My kids were only coming from Gladstone. All was not lost. Julie and I ate the birthday cake that she baked. It was good!

Looks good in the download.
You should not feel intimidated on this forum.
Enjoy your photography irrespective of what camera
you have, whether you shoot Jpeg,Tiff or Raw, it does
not matter and remember, the best photograph you'll
ever take, is the one you like.
That is all that matters

Hi Folks, it's been awhile since I've posted an image. I've been a bit intimated and hesitant to post lately since I've read so many posts here that claim only RAW processed images shot on big sensored cameras are of any value. Many touting they use only the most expensive processing software. Without these, you have no chance for respect. The rest of us are otherwise just wasting our time taking snap shots. I suppose this it true and I agree. But I'm never going to be able to afford a camera like that. So chances of me getting any respect are zilch. I can accept that and I've come to except it. So should I give up? I do love photography, I love the hobby, so I've decided to press on despite my handicap of poor gear. I'm not going to give up, I'm going to keep trying to seek out those WOW shots, I'm still going to proudly lift my camera and take my shots right along with those who snicker when I raise my camera. I'm going to be the cheerleader for those of us who can't afford much. I want tell those folks to be proud of your efforts. Take those family photos, vacations and special occasions. Buy better gear when you can but if you can't, keep on taking pictures. Take the time to look at every photographers images to help you learn. You can do a lot if you just try, but never be ashamed in what you do. Photography is a tool tocapture moments in time, so capture those moments and enjoy doing just that. Save your images (good or bad) enjoy them for years to come. With Christmas approaching, I hope I have encouraged everyone to get your camera out, doesn't matter what brand or it's expense...just take those pictures. You'll be glad you did. Now this image is one I took on a cheap camera as dawn broke over Pensacola Beach Florida. I captured this moment in time...the sun has just arose on this day and is giving it's warmth. A day when the Emerald colored sea was choppy, to early for beach goers, the air was crispy and clean. A beautiful beginning to the day. God Bless you and a very Merry Christmas to you all, enjoy the Holidays with lots of photos.

Very well said, James! We make the best of what we have and should never feel discouraged. Have a very Merry Christmas and keep on snapping!

I've been trying to recover from pneumonia, so haven't been able to get out and shoot Christmas scenes. It has been very discouraging, but then I hear in my head old Winston Churchill saying "Nevvah give up, nevvah nevvah give up", so as soon as I'm able I will get out and start shooting again.

James, I'm in your boat. I shoot with a Nikon D40X which at the time I bought it "is (was) a fine piece of kit." I shoot with JPEG fine and still get the shots that are okay with me. I've tried to download RAW software into my computer, but just can't seem to get there from here. I'm not too tech savvy, so I do what I know... I agree with you totally. Shoot with what you have and work on your techniques to obtain the best shots possible. Thanks for the inspiration. rpm

I kind of "feel your pain," Jim. I have a D7100 and 6 lenses, all Sigma and Tamron. The equipment some people on this site claim to own blows my mind sometimes. But it doesn't dampen my enjoyment of the hobby. I haven't posted much lately, because other things have taken up my time but I do checkout UHH every day. Just remember "It's the photographer, not the camera." And Merry Christmas.

James, fantastic photo. Sharp as tacks and the composition is great. Thanks for sharing this photo and I hope your remarks are a little tongue in cheek type. I have found that overall the members of UHH to be fantastic reviewers that will help members to improve their photography, at least in my own experience I have found it helpful.
