Hi Folks, it's been awhile since I've posted an image. I've been a bit intimated and hesitant to post lately since I've read so many posts here that claim only RAW processed images shot on big sensored cameras are of any value. Many touting they use only the most expensive processing software. Without these, you have no chance for respect. The rest of us are otherwise just wasting our time taking snap shots. I suppose this it true and I agree. But I'm never going to be able to afford a camera like that. So chances of me getting any respect are zilch. I can accept that and I've come to except it. So should I give up? I do love photography, I love the hobby, so I've decided to press on despite my handicap of poor gear. I'm not going to give up, I'm going to keep trying to seek out those WOW shots, I'm still going to proudly lift my camera and take my shots right along with those who snicker when I raise my camera. I'm going to be the cheerleader for those of us who can't afford much. I want tell those folks to be proud of your efforts. Take those family photos, vacations and special occasions. Buy better gear when you can but if you can't, keep on taking pictures. Take the time to look at every photographers images to help you learn. You can do a lot if you just try, but never be ashamed in what you do. Photography is a tool tocapture moments in time, so capture those moments and enjoy doing just that. Save your images (good or bad) enjoy them for years to come. With Christmas approaching, I hope I have encouraged everyone to get your camera out, doesn't matter what brand or it's expense...just take those pictures. You'll be glad you did. Now this image is one I took on a cheap camera as dawn broke over Pensacola Beach Florida. I captured this moment in time...the sun has just arose on this day and is giving it's warmth. A day when the Emerald colored sea was choppy, to early for beach goers, the air was crispy and clean. A beautiful beginning to the day. God Bless you and a very Merry Christmas to you all, enjoy the Holidays with lots of photos.

James, Merry Christmas and happy shooting to you, too! I think you photo is just fine. It looks sharp and clear to me. It expresses that "coastal feel" very nicely.

Great photo. Never give up. I also only have Nikon D7100 not a high priced camera as do a lot of others on here. We are here to have fun with our photography.

James56, I do thank you for your encouraging words. I am a member of the very same group you described so perfectly. However I do know that you have posted some amazing photos, including the one from Pensacola Beach, and I have always thought of your pictures very highly.
I am retired, on a very fixed budget and call my very old Canon Rebel and true and tried SX50 my tools of the trade. But I love photography and I love the UHH forum since it is, just like you stated, for me a way to learn and improve my skills. I especially like to read constructive comments and critiques, not needless bashing, because it teaches me so much. And one of these days I too will be brave enough to post a photo.
Thank you and the best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year.

Very appealing photo with the texture of the emerald green water.

As you may recall, James, I spent at least a year extolling the virtues of the Canon SX50 bridge camera

Those with expensive gear can take just as many boring photos as those without. Artistry, emotion, impact and creativity are so much more important than "sharp at 100%"

All the best to you and your family this holiday season.

James. Merry Christmas and thanks for supporting our local area - I'm just down the road in Destin.

You're photo is great. Let no one tell you otherwise.

There's a whole heap of quotes on photography- some of them are here:

http://digital-photography-school.com/photography-quotes/

And
http://www.mademan.com/mm/photography-quotes.html

The most appropriate is 'the best camera is the one you have'. A good photographer can creat a great image with a basic tool. An amazing camera alone never made a great photographer.

We should all, if we are to be considered photographers, go out with cheap, manual everything camera and single frame of film, and creat something extraordinary. That would be a test of what separates the men from the boys or the women from the girls!

Thanks Carol, I took this about 1400 feet out on the Pensacola Fishing Pier. I waited till the morning glow was basking the high rise hotels. Some of photography requires us to patiently wait for just the right light.

James, don't take them so seriously. My observation is that people who spend lots of time focusing on gear don't spend nearly so much time focusing on worthwhile subjects in a worthwhile fashion.

I can't Hal...I love taking pictures, although I'll never have the best in gear, I'll have what a lot of us have...a heart that loves capturing life and surroundings through photos. They may not be superb, but they are mine.

Wonderful to hear this from you arperry. The gear you have are just fine. Part of the trick to good photography is learning what you can do with what you have. So many try to do more than their gear can do. This is a great forum to learn from, many great teachers abound here. But as you mentioned, there are some soles here that are just angry and sad individuals. Keep at it arperry, and post something soon...You be fine and surprised, join in when your comfortable.

Thank you Linda, you've always been a champion of everyone who has the desire to pick up a camera. I've seen you grow over the years in your own photography journey. Your so willing to share what you've learned with anyone, doesn't matter what they shoot with. Your efforts have probably led to 100's in SX50 sales, I just with I could do the same with Sony. It's a wonderful camera and fits with my message. Which is just to enjoy taking pictures. If your poor, be proud...never be ashamed if you don't have lots of money. Photography can be enjoyed just as much by everyone. It's going to be special Linda this Christmas...it is for me every year.

Your picture is very nice.... I just use my cell phone. And I have a few that I think are pretty darn good. But, that's my opinion. I love trying to capture the perfect picture. i have very few that comment on them. But I have a couple people that are very encouraging... so I keep snapping away.
Merry Christmas !

I think your capture is great but curiosity is killing me, why were you running a -1.3 exposure compensation?

I've enjoyed all of your photos, James, and been seriously impressed with many of them. One doesn't need expensive stuff to do good work, any more than one needs the most expensive hammer in the hardware store to drive a nail. Having good equipment makes the job easier, but I've seen plenty of bent nails driven that way by expensive hammers.

And Merry Christmas! Maybe Santa will bring you one of those hammers?

I can't shoot Raw, so to get the most from jpeg, I shoot dark. That way I could run it though Photomatrix to capture as much dynamics as I can and control the lighting better. Experience has taught me that the program works best with underexposed images. I'm not saying this is proper or the right way, but is a method I've used to get the most by my limitation of only having jpeg available on the camera. I've had good success this way. And I'm not knocking people with good gear. I just want to encourage people who can't afford that good stuff that there is hope.
