To Marion. When I posted my Walmart question I was just sitting around sipping some of the finest aged Christmas cheer. I knew when I asked it would upset some folks. I did learn a lot. I'm new to ditgtl phography. I'm not only learning my camera also my lap top. I enjoy looking at a lot of the photos that folks post. My hope is to be as good as a lot of them. When I started I didn't know anything about the gray market. I had no idea how dishonest some advertising can be. I know the day of going to a real store and talking with real people will soon be gone. I live in Council Bluffs Iowa we had two Best Buy stores. They are gone now. Omaha had 3 or 4 now only one. It doesn't leave a lot.
But there is a upside, when I can ask a question and get a lot of honest information and still be able to piss some people off. That's just fun.
Even when you see a big name store you still have to be careful no matter how cleverly they advertise. The day of making a dollar a little at a time have gone to get rich quick. That's progress !

One person recommends you ask Walmart for an answer but to be negative here most Walmart employee are not smart enough to know and give you the correct answer for my own experience. Always question you get from any employee from other sources first.

First you have to understand how Walmart buys. They set a price that they will pay, and force the maker of whatever to supply them with something similar to the item you and I would like to buy, at their price. that's why a $2 bag of chips at the gas station weighs 7.25 oz. and the same $2 bag at wally world weighs 6.5 oz. And Ww buys in volume, really BIG volume. I will never again buy anything electronic from Walmart; because whatever it is, it's not the same as the 10% higher priced item with the exact same name across the street. Just my 2 cents...

You are now spouting supposition and rumor which has no fact at all. Walmart/Sam's Club does NOT purchase that way at all. Yes, Walmart/Sam's Club purchases in large amounts. They purchase many things locally from local producers. They also have distribution centers across the country and world wide. They purchase items regionally, locally and nationally. But everything goes through local acquisition by local store managers, district managers and regional managers. JUST LIKE ANY OTHER MAJOR STORE!!! This includes Target, Walgreen, CVS etc. There are many "Walmart Haters" that think that they abuse employees, and other things. These are LIES. Walmart full time and part tie employees are given opportunities to participate in stock ownership (yes I own about 460 shares of Walmart Stock). I started at Walmart in New Haven Ct right after Hartford Insurance laid off all of their IT staff that was making more than 40k per year ( I was making 96K per year. This was right after the 911 investigation in NYC as Hartford held the insurance on the twin towers. I went to work at a Walmart Supercenter that was just in the process of having the shelving installed. I was an hourly electronics employee working 40 hours a week and started at $10.40 per hour. By the time the store opened (6 weeks later) I was the Electronics Department Manager and was making $15.20 per hour. I worked there for 3 years and then transferred to Bensalem Pa (just outside of Philly) as the Sporting Goods Manager ($16.75 per hour). I worked there for 2 years and was sent to management school for 6 weeks and my salary was $3,650 per month (they kind of glossed over the fact that I would be working 12-14 hour days as an assistant manager and possibly 6 days a week during the holidays) but it was good. When I completed my 6 weeks training and was moved to my first store as an Assistant Manager, I was over Lawn and Garden, Hardware, Sporting Goods, Toys, Electronics, Photo & Video as my primary responsibilities and over the rest of the store as those managers were on their days off or vacation (yes we got 3 weeks of vacation a year). Sound pretty much like any other retail business doesn't it? So quit shouting about stuff you don't know. Yes Walmart is Anti-Union. So are hundreds of other stores. The difference is the Unions have targeted Walmart because they REALY want access to the money that 40,000 employees would be forced to pay to the unions for forced membership. ITs all about money for the unions and they spread lots of innuendo and ridicule. You don't see them fighting to get into K-mart / Sears because they know that that store is going bankrupt AGAIN.

AS I STATED earlier, Walmart is an AUTHORIZED Nikon Dealer (and Canon I believe). Their website has lots of secondary vendor that are NOT part of Walmart using their site. These include 47th St Photo, Cameta, and several others. You can identify them 2 ways. 1: They require you to have items shipped to your home or business and are not part of Walmart and they will not ship the item to your nearest Walmart for you to pickup. Walmart's online services WILL ship (for free) to your local store for your pickup. 2: They clearly state on the page "Not a Walmart Store of something to that effect.

Sold & Shipped by 47st. Photo Sold & Shipped by Cameta Camera
Sold & Shipped by Beach Camera

Etc. If you look at store availability, you need to also look to see where it came from.

Okay. So I can clarify this for all... I actually fell into this trap. It IS a grey market camera. The only way of knowing on the D5300 is by the stock number printed. This is a classic case of bait and switch fronted by Walmart. When I called Walmart out on it, they directed me to a page you can access on their site that says they're not responsible for any information listed on their website...WTF??? Needless to say, they don't warranty anything, won't refund your money, and basically give you the "you should've known" line when they were complicit in the deceit. 47st Photo are a bunch of swindlers who are nearly impossible to get a hold of. Their page states that there's a 15% restocking fee... Ouch! For me that would be $90! Anyway, I found all of this out after I had taken pictures (shutter count) so I figure they'll give me the run around. For me, time is worth more than money, so I am sticking the landing. I'll save up some money and if the camera body dies... I'll buy a refurb from Nikon w/a warranty... The true benefit of this whole sordid affair is that the lens mechanisms are separate from the body, so there is less money involved if it does die. All I can say is SHAME ON YOU, WALMART! I will NEVER buy any photo equipment through Walmart/47st again.

Lesson: Even though Walmart parades the "Nikon AUTHORIZED Dealer" credentials in front of you, they're deceiving you and you should consider it grey market equipment.

I wasn't arguing that it was a grey market camera. It clearly is. But, you purchased it from 47th street photo (through Walmart) you did not purchase it from Walmart. It clearly says 47th street on their website. Same on you for not reading the clearly marked print

Dave,

I did know that I was purchasing it through 47st. The problem lies in the fact that neither retailer posted that it was an international version, which would have been the honest thing to do. (See Amazon's postings) This was only found out AFTER receiving the box with a UPC # and calling Nikon. By the way, Walmart AND Walmart.com are both listed by Nikon as Authorized Dealers. This would imply that there would be a standard. Walmart needs to be up front and honest.

I would like to know how recent the Walmart page said "International Version" on it. I called them out on it a week and a half ago...Went round and round with corporate where my insistence was that they needed to divulge this information instead of hiding behind their "We're not responsible for what is written page."

I'm not. It really has to do with honest trading practices. I live in a small town in Idaho, no local camera repair shop... Closest one is 120+ miles away! Grey market is not really an issue, it is a product of international trade practice/tariffs. With the advent & proliferation of the internet, this is becoming harder to control.

There is a Walmart within a couple miles of my house - I avoid it at all cost. The only good thing about Walmart is the "People of Walmart" videos on YouTube.
