"IS" is name with canon...image stabization......L lenses have it......

I'm not talking about image stabilization (after all, I do sell cameras for a living) . . .

I was asking about the feature that automatically turns off the image stabilization when mounted to a tripod.

Also, not all 'L' lenses have IS.

When I'm using the only IS (VR to Nikon) lens I own I do so with video. But when I do stills on a tripod with this lens I don't turn it off and never notice the difference... not a problem.

That's all???

Turn off VR if your shutter speed is 1/500 or faster... And when you do turn VR on, you need to enable it (half press on the shutter button) for about 1/2 second before triggering the shutter.

The effect is, it should probably be off unless you are fairly sure it will help the next exposure you'll make.

Is this process of pressing and holding the shutter release for 1/2 second to activate VR camera specific? I'm using a Nikon D5300 w/Tamron 16-300mm lens. The VR switch is on the lens.

I've never heard of that feature . . .

Which Canon lenses have that and what is that feature called?

Don't know what it is called or just which lenses have it but it is a feature in their newer, longer lenses. Without checking I believe that both my EF 70-200 f/2.8 L II and my EF 100-400 L II have it. Not a big deal to me. Unless I forget I usually turn off stabilization when using a tripod anyway.

The switch on the lens enables that module. But it is normally idle and not doing anything (and is not draining the battery either). When you activate Auto Focus it also activates Vibration Reduction. It takes maybe as long as half a second for it to sample, analyze, and equalize the camera shake. Generally if the camera is in AF-C mode and by default set to Release Priority the VR cannot equalize shake before the shutter fires. If Focus Priority is set it may or may not be fast enough. To be positive the VR system should be given between 1/4 and 1/2 second to stabilize before the shutter is releazed.

LF, if you leave the IS on, you'll get cleaner shots. The IS will automatically start to sense and correct for vibrations in the tripod. Learn to use the tech you're paying for!

Wow. Thanks for taking the time to vent to us regarding your lack of attention to detail.

Unless you're shooting fully automatic, it's simply one more camera setting you should be aware of. No different than shutter speed, aperture, iso etc.
We don't need that sort of bell/whistle that will only add $$$$ to the cost of the camera!

My VR is permanently off! Three years ago I had the misfortune (stupidity?) of turning it on and forgetting to turn it off; I went out for a fall day of shooting waterfalls (with beautiful leaves) in New England. When I got back all of my photos were perfectly exposed and focused -- but useless because of the VR movement on the tripod! I turned off the VR and haven't turned it back on.

You don't have a VR issue, you have a memory problem-yours!

When I turn VR off I put on a headband with big floppy ears attached to it. If by chance I forget to turn it back on the people who point and laugh at me serve as a good reminder. Headbands with big floppy ears are available from Amazon.
