I get least expensive class 10 cards (although class 4 will do and save money). I don't pay attention to brand and have Sandisk, Kingston, and PNY. Never a problem with the standard cards.

I do check Amazon ratings and won't buy anything with over 5% ones. Don't think I have seen that on SD cards.

Only problem I have had is with a CF card that takes micro SD inserts. It didn't work to record my backup jpegs. But I may have had wrong settings.

Here is one I'd buy:

At Costco, they are selling 64mb Sandisk for 14.99 or 32 Sandisk Extreme for same price. Memory is super cheap now.

TYPO: You mean 64GB, no one has made MB thumb drives for years. http://www.costco.com/SanDisk-Extreme-Plus%e2%84%a2-32GB-Class-10-SDHC.product.100235312.html The 64GB one are sold out!

Well googling the cheapest card may be dumb in your eyes. But it's certainly better than you idiots answering questions that were not asked The OP did not ask for a parental lecture. The problem with most of you dummies is you think you know what's best for the poster regardless of what he or she asked.

Why provide an answer to a question that would take the OP down the path of unnecessary risk? All it does is make an ass out of the advisor who knows better, and a victim out of the unsuspecting consumer. That's like Microsoft giving you a technically correct but functionally useless error message when your computer crashes! It's arrogant as hell, pisses off the customer, and does nothing to ensure the customer has any trust or brand loyalty.

If you were starting out, and asked questions that resulted in technically workable purchases, but functionally risky operations and even dangerous failures, would you be satisfied with the results? I think a little guidance is welcome! I always look for it and EXPECT IT when I buy something I've never used before.

When I was starting out, at the age of 13, I had a couple of mentors who ran a camera store in my area. They very carefully guided me away from cheaper, inferior items that they knew from prior experience would be likely to disappoint me over the long term. I am grateful to this day, because they steered me down safe and correct paths that kept my gear working. I needed working gear, even that young, because I was the lone candid and sports photographer for my school newspaper and yearbook. I still have nearly everything I bought from them from 1969 to 1973, and although I don't use it, most of it still works! Only the cheap stuff I bought from Spiratone died, and I replaced it with good stuff!

Yes, you can find plenty of cheap SD cards. They don't all work. And the GOOD ones are inexpensive enough that you really should get the best. Some risks are not worth saving a few dollars. Some of us learned that the hard way.
Why provide an answer to a question that would tak... (show quote)

Well thanks for your fatherly or avuncular response. And it is just the type of post that is patently offensive. You assume the OP doesn't know what he is asking so you reformulate the question and provide answers to what you think he or she ought to be asking. Even a baby knows to cry when it is wet or hungry. Guess you figure UHH posters don't know how to ask a question. Geesus.

As a newbie on this blog I really enjoy the discussion even when it gets tangential to other associations to the "question".
As an aside, I have grown increasing despondent with the anger and insults in our communities and I hope we can have civil
discourse without getting stressed out over comments. If it makes you feel better, and you want to pay the physical and mental cost of your irascibility, go ahead but it just revs your physiological stress system to your own detriment.

I assume as a "newbie" when you ask a specific question you are seeking a direct answer. If not, then why bother? Perhaps you need a father or mother figure to look up to and if that is the case might I suggest you look elsewhere.

You probably live in the real world in a place where people have manners and social skills. In those situations a question is normally the prelude to a conversation. Some have unfortunately never learned social skills nor manners. The internet is the only safe place for them. In the real world they couldn't survive.

In the long run buying external USB hard drives is more economical. another possible solution is storing on "the cloud". There, even if your house and everything you own is burned up, your pictures are still safe. I use Amazon cloud and WD ext hard drives.

As a retired IT professional and very much amateur photographer, typically when I ask an important technical question I want to know the 'what' but often also the 'why?' So hope my reply was not a parental lecture but a suggestion backed up with my own testing and the tools and methods I used to help me make a decision. Also tried a bit of British humour but perhaps that didn't translate too well :) (you'll also notice the British spellings highlighted by US English spell-checker as suspect - but lets NOT get going on that topic 'cos life is far to short, and who cares :)

What's the cheapest SD card I can use in my A6300 for still photography and will it be fast enough if I need to use it for burst mode? I'm advertising free pet photos in my area to help me practice my photography and I think I'm going to need a bunch of SD cards since the response has been more than expected...

Great camera for the purpose. The burst mode on my a 6300 combined with the continuous focus can do an awesome job. My girl friend trains dogs including agility training and those pups move fast.

There are only a few problems with the a6300. One is the way the sdcard is mounted makes it difficult to remove. A second is that there is only one card slot. This means you don't have a backup card. If a card fails, your screwed. And cards do fail; not as often as in the old days, but they do.

So I choose to use ONLY the top of the line cards from Sandisk or Lexar. (Others may be as good, but I know these best.) A 32gb Sandisk Extreme Pro, 95mbs card only costs about $18-20. You could get away with a 16gb, but the difference in price is only a couple bucks. The high speed does empty the buffer quicker which means you can "machinegun" a few seconds longer.

Sounds like you are planning to keep the images on the cards. Let me recommend that you do not do that. Instead, purchase two external usb drives or about 1 terabyte each. ($50-60 each. Either Western Digital or Seagate. Both excellent.) Then make a folder with an identifier name or number for each shoot. Copy the whole sdcard into each of the external drives. That gives you redundancy, just in case. Then just reformat the sdcard in your camera and reuse it. (The third of my few complaints about the camera is that they have the format command on the 5th pane of the toolbox section of the menu.)

I have not had a failure of either a Lexar or Sandisk card. I've been using the same 8 cards for a long time and test them every so often. Not a problem.

On another topic. I recommend that you treat this like a business. Whether you charge or not, get a signed release form which includes a "hold harmless" clause. Even though you are doing this for free, it is entirely possible for someone to decide that the experience has "traumatized" their dog. (It might have been traumatized by the bad training techniques they use, but they'll blame you.) When you decide you've gotten good enough, look up a local Karen Pryor Academy trained dog trainer (KPA is the gold standard in dog training.) and try to set up an arrangement with him or her.

And remember that "dog" is just God spelled backwards.

I always recommend class 10 cards, especially if you're doing burst or video work. These class 10 cards, as far as I know, are the fastest out there and it's also important to pick a good brand - Sandisc comes to mind. Good luck.

if your interested in 'traditional' hard rives, look at this.

http://lifehacker.com/the-most-and-least-reliable-hard-drive-brands-1505797966

Based on detailed analysis by Backblaze guess which hard drives I buy :)

And if you want backup on the go that works just fine with Android phone/ tablet, then Sandisk Cruzer USB 3.0 256GB is very cheap on Black Friday deal on Amazon at the mo. (convenient but also easier to lose of course :)

It is faster. Although I have not tried slower cards, so I am just repeating what the initial salesman I worked with in the camera store told me in late 2011.

The card has a marking, a 4 or a 10 in a circle indicating speed. a 90 mb card is a class 10. Will photo and post the info card that the Walmart Photo department (where I Work) has.
