I attended the airshow today at Ftv Worth Alliance Airport. This is a FA18 Hornet on a high speed pass doing about 700 MPH, approaching the sound barrier. The effect you see is called a vapor cone that forms when doing this kind of speed. I've only ever seen this before on the internet in pictures and never thought I'd actually get to photograph it. I said right after this that if I never was able to take another photo that I could die a happy man. Chills now just typing this.
That is very cool...thanks for sharing it.. and... now.. keep shooting anyway.. and just stay a happy man.
Thanks much. I will and I am.
I have never seen that before. Excellent work.
Vapor cones form only when the air is heavily laden with water moisture (humidity). I saw this once or twice in tropical Viet Nam, but never in dry Southern California.

Fantastic capture, stay happy and continue shooting
Fantastic capture! I saw this done once at an air show at Jones Beach in NY. The Blue Angels were showing their stuff. I was not able to capture the vapor cone as you did. I'll try again next summer.
Wow! Lucky you - right place, right time, right equipment.
