Siena, I understand, the info you were getting was for South Carolina, that's why I was confused. Sorry, didn't mean to belabor the point. I'm in the northeastern part of the state in Plainfield,a couple miles from I-395 and Canterbury.

No problem Dave O!

I live right in the middle of Charleston. Are you looking for landscape, architect, or wildlife? PM me and I will let you know some locations or even catch up with you and show you some great spots.

Telling people you are going to Charleston brings out the folks who don't know their geography too well. Saying you are going to "Charlie West" eliminates the confusion. If you have a long lens you might find the airport, Chuck Yeager Field, interesting. There isn't much flat land for runways in the area so engineers cut the top off of a mountain and built an airport on top of it. Landing on top of a mountain is fun, if you know what is happening. At 1/2 mile from touchdown (diagonally) we were 1000' above the terrain. The terrain rises rather rapidly and viola! ...touchdown, right on the numbers. On a normal approach the aircraft will be at apprx. 200' at 1/2 mile from touchdown. The airport offers a scenic view of the city and a the Kanawha River valley.

Hi David - guess I need to know my geographie nicknames! Thanks for the tip about Chuck Yeager Field. It sounds interesting, esp. for the views. - S.

Hello Hoggers. I'll be I Charleston at the end of next week and have one free day. Any suggestions for interesting/scenic photo ops within an hour or so drive of the city? Thanks.

depends on what you what to photograph. there are the chemical spills, and all the unemployed. my cousin said most of logan county, just south of charleston has 'for sale' signs outside most houses. i'm hoping he'll take me there when i next go to visit my brother. and the mountain top removal, if you have a drone, or are willing to test the mine's security for ground level shots. oh, you are looking for beauty & tourist level snaps? try gauley bridge, about an hour up river.

Capitol Street is a great place to go in the historic area. The river front park, Kanawha state park, Cato park, there is also a nature preserve near by. If you have 2-2.5 hour time span, travel to the New river gorge, Black water falls, or the Cass Scenic railroad. Or just hit a road and go in any direction and you will find all kinds of places to stop and shoot.

Oh and Babcock State Park is not too far away. Check it out as well. If the leaves are peaking, there will be a lot of photographers there.

Thanks for pointing that out. Maybe the next president will take away the rest of our jobs.

Go southeast towards Fayetteville, WEST VIRGINIA, and see the New River Gorge Bridge. At one time, this was the largest steel arch bridge in the World. Next weekend, October 15, will be bridge day, the day when a whole bunch of brave people jump off the bridge to the New River. Yes, parts of West Virginia are mired in poverty, but it's also a beautiful state.

wanting to shoot in logan leaves me feeling guilty about profiting off the backs of the destitute, but then that's sort of what photography has done through out its history, at least half of photography. the other half is capturing the beauty of our world. and maybe taking those pix could heighten others' awareness of what is happening there.

Hi Pelha,
I would like to be somewhere between the polluted and unemployed and the tourist snaps. Thanks for the Gauley Bridge suggestion.

Hawks Nest - Gaulley Bridge and Babcock State Park are the first choices of my spouse who grew up there. All good choices.
The State capital used to be good but the view has been messed up in recent years.
