Hello Hoggers. I'll be I Charleston at the end of next week and have one free day. Any suggestions for interesting/scenic photo ops within an hour or so drive of the city? Thanks.

Should be lots of good shots in "old" Charleston. Most of my shots of the area were in Savannah GA but look online at Charleston to get some ideas.

They are about 2 hours apart but both are steeped in history.
Fort Sumter (Star Spangled Banner fame) comes to mind.

True but if you look at the "forts" link, there are several forts in the Charleston area (within the 1 hour drive) that the OP stated. Savannah is about 2 hours but, as I stated, the list compares things to see in both.

From the title of the post I thought that you were going to be in Charleston, W VA and not Charleston,SC! I'm slow!

Charleston,WVa is several hours from Charleston SC,that's why I made a funny about a long walk of about 470 miles! Enjoy!

Telling people you are going to Charleston brings out the folks who don't know their geography too well. Saying you are going to "Charlie West" eliminates the confusion. If you have a long lens you might find the airport, Chuck Yeager Field, interesting. There isn't much flat land for runways in the area so engineers cut the top off of a mountain and built an airport on top of it. Landing on top of a mountain is fun, if you know what is happening. At 1/2 mile from touchdown (diagonally) we were 1000' above the terrain. The terrain rises rather rapidly and viola! ...touchdown, right on the numbers. On a normal approach the aircraft will be at apprx. 200' at 1/2 mile from touchdown. The airport offers a scenic view of the city and a the Kanawha River valley.

Siena, I understand, the info you were getting was for South Carolina, that's why I was confused. Sorry, didn't mean to belabor the point. I'm in the northeastern part of the state in Plainfield,a couple miles from I-395 and Canterbury.
