Geeze, man you are scaring me! I've had one for a couple of months and not had a problem. And I'd better not!
Glad to hear that but, it's all over the web.
Pls defiine "all over the web"...I've been using my D5100 "all over town" without any AF problems...
If you google : "Nikon D5100 Autofocus defect" you will see 1,270,000 returns including You Tube "How to Fix it" which I watched. Of course not all of those returns are specifically about that problem but many are from different sources.
"All over the web" is the same phrase I use for internet scam sites. Sounds like you have been looking at some of them. The D5100 has exemplary reviews from every REPUTABLE source out there.
And no, I don't have one. Only problem I have ever seen personally with one is a flip screen viewer that was broken off, they aren't made to be used as a handle it seems.

6,529 shutter actuations on my D5100 and I have not noticed a defect. But since it is all over the web it must be true.
Just curious, was there ever a major dslr recall from any manufactorer?
I've had mine since August. No problemo.
I own the D5100 for almost a year . no problems must
be operater error ..

I've got my eye on this camera (Nikon D5100). I've been reading on the net about an inherent auto-focus defect in this camera. Can owner's of this camera confirm this or is it operator error?
I would go for the D7000.!
Like Namwife, I've had mine since Christmas. Absolutely no problems. It is a very fine camera! 8-)
Sounds to me like someone is trying to use a Non Auto Focus lens on a camera that does not have a built in auto focus motor, which the Nikon D5100 does not have.
If you don't use an AF or AF-S lens, you won't get auto focus no matter how good of a photographer you are.
Hope this helps.

Had mine for 8 months now and no problems. The camera has more potential than I do.

Same here. I have had mine for 2 months and had not problem with the camera. As already stated pilot error is the big problem
No problem here after several hundred photos. People have a problem, and they immediately blame the product, rather than themselves. I'm sure Nikon's competitors don't mind seeing negative rumors in print. I have read negative reviews for lots of products, and it was obvious that it was the writer who was at fault.

I've had my D5100 since July 2011. I've run about 10,000
frames through it. I too can only report operator error.
Like when I try to take a bright sunny shot at 5000 ISO.
What a baffoon!

Perhaps this is urban legend time. It isn't necessarily true, but repeated often enough to develop a following and people start assuming it's true. I tend to be more skeptical of what I read, even in hard copy.

I have not had a problem with auto focus. Here are two birds in flight photos which really test the auto focus. Lens is the Nikon 28-300mm VR.
