While on active duty in the Navy, I moonlighted as a photographer at an amusement park. I used a nice 6x9 Speed graphic, using film holders and B&W orthochromatic film. My boss offered a number of packages for sale, mostly the posed "candid" shots. The resulting photos had a real "old time" look to them, and folks weren't resistant to having photos taken of them and their children.

However, when the time came for them to pick out the photos for the packages, a lot lost interest in the whole deal.

I read somewhere that a number of actors don't ever watch their own movies. I suspect that this is a factor.

I've never understood the fascination people have over photographs of themselves. Unless it's a special occasion with special people, I couldn't care less! I know what I look like. I want pictures of other things, other people, etc.

I don't take many people pictures, but when I do, if the person is aware I photographed them, I offer to show it to them. If they say they would like a copy, I get an e-mail address to send it to them. If they don't ask I leave it alone.

I have the same problem when photographing kids at amusement parks or whenever we are shooting special events and just see some cute shots. Very few people will ever email me and ask for a copy and I think they are probably suspect that you will use their email address as a spam opportunity or something else. So I don't worry about it either and I'm happy to please the few that do want them.

More of a Psychological Question is this one I suppose ..

I do lots of Street Photography with the Emphasis on Alternative / counter Culture etc ,
as well as Large outdoor events ..

I often Stop people in the Street ( men or women or groups )and ask if I could take their photo .. 99% they say yes ..
They sometimes ask for a card so they can get an free Email Copy .. And sometimes I give them
a card and say they are welcome to free copy via email if they write to me .

But what happens is that 99% Dont write ..
Cant understand this .. Surely they would want to see the image ?

Am trying to understand the Psychology behind this ..
Someone said ' It's because they are apprehensive '
Of What ? What's the worst that can happen ?

Any thoughts on this ?
Any same experience ?

Cheers

One reason: Becuz then their email addresses could potentially be sold to hundreds of sources that could spam them to death.
Another: They might wonder why someone is going around trying to take pix of them and feel it is somewhat out of the ordinary---ie that the wild-eyed photog has ulterior motives.
Third: There are numerous others but I am to lazy and not inclined to spend time listing them.

I never want pictures of me except when I need them like for a passport. So if you ask to take my picture I would say OK because it doesn't matter and you want to do it so I would be please to let you. But I do not want the pictures.

Writing to you means they have to disclose their e-mail address to you and possibly subject themselves to spam. As mentioned before, it would be better to have a website listed on your card and tell them to check it out later to see their picture.

Of course, the savvy will suspect going to a web site will get them a cookie.

January of 1942 my Dad was walking down Broad Street in Newark trying to join the service , the recruitment centers were full and had to go over to NYC to join up . Anyway a guy was snapping pictures for 25 cents . Within a couple of weeks he got the B&W print in the mail . I still have the photo . He looks like he has the weight of the world on him . I guess he did .
So that's the way to take pictures of people . They pay , you take the picture and then get it in the mail / Email .
But there is a comment above that makes a lot of sense . " Everyone has cameras now , so it's no big deal anymore ". So I suppose people are being polite to say yes , but in reality now , it really is no big deal .
Oh , how I dislike the 21st Century ! LOL

This makes a lot of sense to me. Since the majority of people can't tell a decent photo from a gem, it makes even more sense that there would be a sense of "Why bother?" to receive the results. A cell phone photo from a friend will do.

Many of them probably own mirrors.

You are SO right! Funny how we think alike -- I was going to say it would be better to look in a mirror and that would be better than picture!

Have any of you street photographers ever had someone ask (or demand) you to delete the photo you just took of them?
