I've done 3 updates to my D500, and never have I removed the XQD card. I just set the SD slot as primary.

Why would you need to? No reason you can't update from a XQD card that I'm aware of, unless you don't have a XQD reader. I just didn't have one available and why I asked if I could update with just the SD card in place, that was before I read the manual and didn't know at the time you could set the D500 to use a particular card as primary, usually the setting are referring to Raw + JPG, one going to one card and the JPGS to the other card... or overflow etc.

Sometimes it's difficult to interpret a statement with no facial expressions or intonations. A gut reaction can certainly produce mixed responses. As we progress, internet slang and texting abbreviations are taking over communications for many. Grammar, punctuation, spelling and sentence structure are becoming a lost art.

Social media IMO is why we're losing face to face social skills...

There was a recent thread inquiring about how to use a gray card. My response was, "check the manual." I guess I had an attitude, too.

I think if we all just checked the manual there would be at least 50% of UHH members who would no longer be here. Manuals are sometimes confusing especially when people honestly don't know much about cameras to begin with. Those who do know cameras rarely need to check the manual unless there is a problem.

You don't need a "Card", but how about a nice leather strap from Tanner Goods! :~)

Funny you mention that, a buddy of mine is a leather crafts person, made me a strap back in the 70's for a Nikon F2A and still have it...I take it that's what you do? Or are you Matt Dillon's (Gunsmoke) side kick? (Festus)

Careful now, I watch that a couple times a week! Never saw many when they were new.

By the way,my perception was a "yes" to the Festus analogy, but I could be wrong. Again...

Heck,it's my favorite show, at the moment I have 41 episodes recorded. Ken Curtis ya know starred several times as different characters before taking on the role as Festus Haggen taking the place of Dennis Weaver in 1964. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWR6FLnPack

Curtis died not too long ago.

I'm not in touch with a lot of today's programming,so some of the old shows are in demand! Law and Order,SVU,In the Heat of the Night....LOL!

No I just like Festus Hagan. Oh, and a nice strap on my cameras. Versus the junk that usually comes with them!

When I needed to use a custom white setting I referred to Mastering the Nikon D800. It laid out the steps that I needed to follow. Hopefully the manual would as well. I don't think I'd have figured them out without having something to follow. It was quite specific, so I wrote the instructions down.

I wonder who writes the manuals, or more specific, who translates the manuals to English. I've got a Ph.d. in engineering and sometimes I have trouble following what is written in the manuals. I suppose that's why there is an after market "How To" books. But I still haven't found where it says the updates should be made to the "primary" card. Guess I've got a blind spot for the word "primary". Oh well.

One reason I buy 3rd party reference or get to know books, like David Busche's Nikon D500, he just told me and I quote "It should be available as a Kindle, Nook, PDF eBook within about two weeks from Rocky Nook. It will be a couple extra months for the printed version to arrive." ...

A Nikon D500 Users Guide already available in PDF form is by Thom Hogan. His Users Guides are very good. The Nikon D500 is a handful. Almost 1000 pages. I find his guides second-to-none!
