I think in today's world most people don't want to read about a subject in a magazine that they may or may not interested in, but would rather Google one they want to know about.
For me, it's "LensWork," a small (7"x8.5") very high quality publication published by Brooks Jensen. I wait anxiously for the beautifully prepared (duotone on lush flat matte stock) piece of art to arrive. It's mailed in a hard paper board envelope to prevent damage to the publication. LensWork presents, along with an article by Jensen on different aspects of photography and photographic art, quite in depth portfolios selected from the hundreds submitted each month. The production values are outstanding. Jenson also has a subscription option for "LensWork Extended," which is an online version that presents more photos from the different featured artists as well as extended interviews. This is not a how-to publication; it is photographic art...very high quality photographic art. I've been enjoying it for years. No advertising trying to sell me another camera...just photographic art. It's the one publication I can't do without.

I prefer Outdoor Photographer and Shutterbug. The others have gotten too repetitious. I agree about the reduced detailed advertising by the big retailers, but we have their websites where everything is listed and where we usually went anyway. The value of advertising was to reduce the subscription price but I notice that subscription rates are rising. True value comes from sites like UHH where you get the real scoop and the useless opinions as well, but you can consider the sources and make your own decisions.
Gave up on printed photo publications. Became mostly advertisements. Only subscribe to Consumer Reports and National Geographic. B&H has monthly targeted articles, some of which are very good and they are FREE. Youtube has an incredible number of articles also free.

I am going to let my subscription to Popular Photography expire. Why: It seems to be getting thinner and thinner every issue. The articles aren't very interesting. I have also noticed that the major photography retailers have cut back on their advertising, i.e. B&H and Adorama used to have several pages showing their products and now one or two. What publications are you fellow "hogs" reading that worthwhile?
I read subscribe to 3 British Photography magazines: Digital Photo, Digital Camera and since I'm a Nikon shooter, also N Photo. They also publish a dedicated Canon mag titled Photo Plus. These are great magazines in my opinion because they teach photography skills and technics plus each issue has a CD of editing tutorials. You can actually learn something from these articles. You can find them at most Barns & Nobles.
I agree with you on Popular Photography. I can hardly find anything of interest there. I'm a long time amateur, shooting family, landscape, etc. so I've no interest in selling my photos, photographing weddings, bar mitzvahs, etc. I don't have a studio, don't use interior lights, will never move to medium or large format. You get the idea. I had a subscription to Digital Photography which I liked better. Another good mag used to be Outdoor Photography. I haven't seen it lately. You can find a lot of good info and help online, such as UHH.
I agree,I thought it was me they have got thinner and not any interesting articles.
I did the same thing for the same reasons. I still get Outdoor Photography, much better articles and other information

I used to subscribe to several of the photog mags, but now the only one I get is Shutterbug, its pretty good, but aimed at pros mostly.

If you are a Nikon user NPHOTO is pretty good. UK magazine of pretty good quality
I'm a subscriber, but not terribly thrilled. My subscription is cheap, and I often see a pro shot &/or an intriguing light setup, but won't likely renew.

I subscribe to Rangefinder; N Photo(Nikon based); and Digital Photography. The last two are from the U.K. but I get a mail subscription in the U.S.
