I recently lost my D7000 and 18-200mm lens.
Am an amateur who mostly does travel photography and considering either the D5500 or D7200.
How important is the wi-fi feature? Until now I just took an extra photo with my cell when I wanted to send it to someone on the spot.
How important is the rotating viewing screen. Do people use it?
Any other comments?
The D7000 was the first of the 7xxx series. Then it was upstaged by the D7100 with more megapixels. The D5500 is an excellent camera with IQ equal to the D7100. I would choose the D7200. It is Nikon's 2nd best DX camera next to the D500. You won't be sorry purchasing the D7200. And later get a Nikon FX lens, 28-300mm for it.
I love my wifi on my camera. I use it for field work (to share instantly) and group photos when I want to be in the shot.
Articulating screens are great for low and high angle shots.
If you travel a lot are you sure that a traditional DSLR is the way to go? You should cconsider mirrorless.
the D7200 is the descendant of your d7000. Controls are similar. The D5500 has more menu diving to change things, although with the touch screen it may be easier than my d5300.
Very tough losing something you like. The d7200 will seem familiar to you and you will appreciate the differences this direct upgrade has.

Thanks for your comments. Besides the $ involved I lost the photos from a two week trip through Utah's National Parks, starting at Arches all the way through The Vally of Fire state park in Nevada.
My memories are still good.
I am wondering why and FX lens was recommended for the DX camera. Care to comment?
I could see doing that if he were planning to purchase an FX camera later but that does not seem to be indicated in his query

I thought the same thing.

I have the 5500. I bought it specifically for the articulating screen. It works great at grandkids birthday parties. I have also used the wifi to remotely trigger the camera. Works great for family photos with a tripod.

I much prefer the D5xxx over the D7xxx. Mostly for the elegant control approach using the active info screen. The unlighted buttons and small unreadable green LCD on the D7xxx don't work for me because I can't find the buttons in the dark and need reading glasses for the green screen.
The D5xxx weighs half the D7xxx. A big advantage if walking any distance.
I really learned to appreciate the articulated screen for things like group selfies on travel, taking images from ground level perspective, holding the camera up above people in front, and using the camera on my telescope.
The D5500 takes the same images as the D7200.
And it costs several hundred dollars less.
My D5300 has wifi and built in gps. I don't use either.

I use the infrared remote for that.

The 18-300 is a better choice for a DX camera.
