I recently lost my D7000 and 18-200mm lens.

Am an amateur who mostly does travel photography and considering either the D5500 or D7200.

How important is the wi-fi feature? Until now I just took an extra photo with my cell when I wanted to send it to someone on the spot.

How important is the rotating viewing screen. Do people use it?

Any other comments?

I have the D5000 with the 18-300 lens that I gave to my husband and he loves that combo. I upgraded to the D7100 and thought I would miss the articulating screen but I mostly didn't. I am VERY happy with the upgrade. I do love the fact that I can send photos to my phone for sharing. If I lost my D7100, I think I would get the D750. It's dubbed the amateur full frame camera! Lol😊

I also wondered why the 28-300 was recommended for the D7200?

I have not used the wI-fi feature on my Nikon yet, but when shooting my grandson, I have used the swivel screen several times with beautiful results. I love the shots down at his level. It is also great at higher angles. When I upgraded to the D7000, I seriously considered the D5100. While I was very happy with the 7000, I was envious of the articulated screen on the d5100 and wondered why Nikon would leave out that feature on a more expensive camera. Some people love it and some never use it! However, you may find the D7200 is more user friendly as you had a D7000 and controls are very similar.

Thanks. Good info.

My 80+ year old eyes are not that great and small buttons and the top screen are a bit too much on my old D7000.

If you need the articulating/touch LCD panel, choose the 5500. If not, the D7200. Both have excellent sensors and produce exceptional images. I never use the articulating feature. And before some asshole asks, I own both cameras.

I hope you had insurance to defray the cost of new equipment. Wi-fi feature isn't important to me. I did use my Eye-fi card at the photography club picnic last Saturday but only so I could show off my candid shots I take with my DSLR and have the appear on my phone then share them to my photo club Facebook site real time.

The D5500 is less than a pound which is good for travelling, since you "mostly do travel photography". Get Nikon 18-140 and you are set for travelling. Rotating viewing screen could be very handy for video and some different angle shots.
D7200 has more pro features, like: weather proof, can work with non AF-S lenses, flash commander, front and rear dial. If you need these, get D7200. Otherwise D5500 gives you the same excellent image quality as D7200.
I use the rotating screen on my D5100 only sometimes. With it you can take a picture when nobody thinks that you are taking picture.

I have the 7100 and would not give it up. I leave it in Auto point and shoot. I canot tell the difference.

Here's a pretty good comparison that points out strengths and weaknesses.

Not a real easy decision.

Another comparison site... Oh and the D7xxx series are not "entry level" as the D3xxx & D5xxx are. Many more features... The articulating screen is a novelty. I used to have one on my old 8700 Coolpix. Seldom used it, at least not for my niche.

I have DX cameras & mostly FX lenses. The smaller sensor uses the "Sweet spot" of the FX lenses (central portion, which normally have better resolution than the edges). That said, I shoot mainly macro & tele shots which are more a reason to use these lenses. The few DX lenses I own are mainly to capture the wide angle aspect when I need it.

I would strongly recommend a D7000 series camera over a D5000 series camera any day of the week. One of the biggest advantages of the Nikon system is availability to their arsenal of of lenses and the D5000 series cameras will only auto focus AF-S lenses; while the D7000 will auto focus any of the AF lenses barring the few designed specifically for the F3. The added bonus too is the the D7000 series cameras will deliver better files to work with in software in post processing, especially if shooting in raw.

Sounds to me like the 5500 would be the way to go then. I have 7000's and like them and find the buttons easy to work with but yes, the top screen can be difficult to read, then again I don't use it much either.

I used the swivel screen on my 5200 quite a lot. Shooting insects etc? The screen allows you to get down and dirty.
shooting people on the street? Point the camera but you dont have to look thru it, just tilt the screen. They never know you took the shot. IN a crowd, put the camera over your head and tilt the screen down so you can see it. I got a lot of use out of it.

Shooting insects that way isn't the best as if you want true life sized shots, auto focus won't cut the mustard. The articulated screen can be useful for some types of shots but really, how many times do the shots utilizing an articulated screen present themselves ? One has to look at their style of shooting to decide whether or not that feature is what they need and that the other features are acceptable.

Again, you have the motor with the 7xxx. This gives you the option of buying non motorized lenses which can save you a bundle. Price of 50mm f1.4 non motorized for example. I picked up a non motorized Micro 105 f2.8 for less than $200 on ebay.
