A fancy bag shouts one thing: "Steal Me!" When I leave camera gear in the car it's inside a clearly marked diaper bag. Who would steal that?

What I can't get my head around is why some people get so worked up, to the point of being judgemental, about what others chose to spend their money on. Personally I couldn't care less what others spend their money on. If I hear that someone has spent £5,330.00 ($6985 US) on a Leica M-P (Typ 240) I would wish them the best with their new acquisition, not ask why they had spent that amount of money on a camera when they could have bought one that cost just a fraction of that price.

I had two of them over a period of years; they are almost impossible to wear out, and still look good; yes, they are expensive, but so is a cadillac !

It's been my experience that the people who spend the most time worrying about what someone else spends are the same people that complain they can't afford this, that, or something else. Human nature at work, I guess.

For the record, when I started this thread I was not "worrying" about how much anyone spends on anything. I was simply not understanding why a bag - a shoulder bag - would be so pricey. For what it is, over $600 seems a bit high to me. People can spend their money any way they want. No skin off my nose. If the bag is worth $649 to someone, for whatever reason, that's fine by me.

Basil, your original post was a legitimate question, I had no problem with it.

I was on the plaza in Kansas City and saw a sweater for over $900.00.

While strolling with my wife on the Plaza in Santa Fe a few months ago, I saw a nice short-sleeve Hawaiian shirt in the window of one of the shops. We went in and I took one that was my size from the rack. I tried it on and thought I might buy it. The sales person of course was telling me how nice it looked on me. Then I looked at the price tag. $190!! I have several Hawaiian shirts that I actually bought in Hawaii and all of them together did not cost that much (and no, there was nothing particularly special about the constriction of this shirt other than it was made in Viet Nam)

Wasn't referring to you. As you state, you weren't criticizing anyone for buying it, you were wondering how it could be worth so much, if I remember your original post correctly. Strange as it may seem, sometimes charging an extravagant price is the best way to sell an item. A lot of people equate price with quality. The company I retired from builds highways as well as supplying materials and services to contractors who do driveways. One of our drivers, sitting at a driveway job on an estate in Westchester County, NY figured up in his head the cost of the work being done. He mentioned to the contractor that it must be a $20,000 job. The contractor's reply? "Yup, it is, but if I don't charge them $50,000 they will think I cheated them!"
Go figure!

I have four camera gags in my closet of various sizes and one sling pack. I didn't pay over $40 for any of them on ebay. Does the exact same thing as a $700 bag does, and that's carry my gear. I have found on photo shoots that's the last thing a person looks at. It's always the camera and lenses.
