I'll admit I'm just a middle class guy, and it's not unheard of for me to pay a premium for something of quality where it's justified (like paying a premium for a genuine Canon OEM battery grip for my 7D2). However, today I received a news letter form B&H and they had an advert for Billingham shoulder bag. I click on the link to look at this bag and, granted it's a very nice looking canvas (canvas, not woven gold) bag, buy the price took me aback - $648?! For a freaking shoulder bag? What on Earth makes a shoulder bag worth that much? Is it that well made or is it just a status thing that people but to show how rich they are?

I don't see that it comes with a camera or lenses.

Looks well made but I like my $37 LowePro Event Messenger bag just fine.

If you really keep looking you'll find some that'll cost you upwards of $4000!

I have a Billingham bag for 15 - 20 years, I also have bags by Think Tank, Tamrac and Lowepro (you can never have too many bags!) The Billingham, quality wise, is streets ahead of any of the others. It goes with me wild camping in Scottish Highlands where it is subjected to very wet muddy and cold conditions, it has toured in India, jungle, desert and city and it is my go to bag for street photography. It was worth every penny... and it's made in the UK

My Billingham bag is also about 20 years old, and other than a replacement insert, it's still the best bag I've ever owned. Well worth the price.

Basil, us Canon shooters tend to be that way. My $40 Canon backpack has more miles on it, and if it could talk, could tell you some taller tales than I can!
But...., Nikon shooter are old money. Most own the Trilogy. If you can afford the trilogy, that bag is just peanuts!!!

I wouldn't pay that much for a bag unless it came with a pro photographer to carry it for one day while giving photography lessons.

Some of my money is so old that it still has Queen Elizabeth I on it

I don't know about Billingham bags but as it has been explained to me by my wife and our daughters, the high end seemingly overpriced bags they all have for whatever reason are guaranteed for life. If something fails on the bag due to anything short of outright abuse, the manufacturer will repair it for free or replace the bag. Personally, I can't see paying an outrageous price for a bag, even if its guaranteed for life, I'll just buy a good bag for way less and if it lasts a few years, that's money in my pocket. I have a Tamrac bad that's probably 15 years old and it still works as good as the day I bought it. I have a big back pack, don't know who made it but it's suppose to be the same pack staff National Geographic photographers use in the field, that's several years old, has storage for all kind of gear plus clothing and appears to be made to last forever and it only cost $230.

They are made from fine canvas and leather with a high degree of quality, detail and style. Similar to these camera bags, canvas and leather luggage and attaches at this end of the market are also extremely pricey. Can you get equal or even better functionally for a lot less? Perhaps, but I'm guessing they won't be a well made or last as long, or look as good. Bags like this are made for relatively affluent people who are interested not only in functionality, but construction and quality and are willing to pay the price to own the best. What something, anything, is worth depends on how much someone is willing to pay for it. There are many luxury items that cost far more then the sum of their parts would seem to dictate, whether its watches, cars, clothing, etc. Its not always about status. On each level on the economic ladder we all tend to buy the best things we feel we can afford.

By adding a little creative padding to tool bags they can be as functional as camera bags at a small fraction of the cost.

It seems anything photographic is automatically unjustifiably expensive.
