He is lucky it was the women's competition. The men put a 16 pound shot.

Overall, sports photography is still much safer than war zone documentary photography, where there is a serious risk of getting killed by bullets or shrapnel while on the job.

a few years ago I was shooting at the Tour of CA (bicycle race)and had spent about an hour scouting the perfect spot for a close up wide angle shot. I was crouched in the gutter as the Peloton was passing at 30mph. I was about to start my shots when something hit me really hard on the side of the face knocking me down. It was a 1/2 full water bottle!!!! I did NOT get my shot but I did get the ultimate souvenir!!!

That may well have been a deliberately thrown water bottle. Many years ago, right after I'd gotten my first digital, I'd gone to a bicycle race held on neighborhood streets in my town. Like you, I found a nice spot wherefrom I could get some decent shots as the mass of bicycles passed through a turn. I'd grabbed a shot or two and as a group of bikes leaned into the turn, I overheard one of the riders say, "I hate it when the photographers do that..." Apparently, they seem to think that a photog sitting next to a turn is a distraction they'd as soon do without.

I was shooting a football game, semi-pro (MEN) from the sideline. You know it, a play right at me. No ouch but had to shoot my mono-pod, had its one leg broken. Now I use an aluminum mono-pod. So far so good, miss that old mono-pod. It could still be used if you were 4 feet 6 inches tall...

Many years ago, I volunteered at the Pac-8 (yes, it was that long ago) Conference track and field championships in Seattle. My task was to run down and mark the shot puts and javelin throws (low tech then). Never turned my back on the athletes.

;-)

Lone, I ran and wrestled in the Pac 8, so I know just how long ago that was? I was there when Stanford got rid of the Indian!!! That will pin point it!

Did you ever run in Seattle? Might be before your time-- but I saw Henry Rono run the steeple chase for Wazoo at several meets in Seattle. Closest I got to track after high school was volunteering, so props to you.

"Here’s a strange occupational hazard for certain sports photographers: getting hit by a shot putter. That’s what happened to one photographer at the 2016 IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships in Portland, Oregon.

Last Friday, American shot putter Kendell Williams accidentally hurled her 8.8 lb (4 kg) shot too far to the left, striking a crouching photographer who was shooting on one knee. The incident was caught on camera and described by commentators."

I want one of those cool Canon vests.

How interesting that a man, driven by Eleusinian forces, should excel at a sport involving strength, stamina, the ability to hurdle barriers and even containing the possibility of a good soaking (inclined to counteract the effects of said forces) - and to do so for so grand an institution that they must bury their righteous pride in a nickname translating to a place where the moon does not shine. 8-) 8-) 8-)

I almost got hit with a football a couple times. Once while covering a high school game and again at an NFL game.

Almost run over at football once and three times at basketball.

My bag got waked by a high school soccer ball and it was about 40 feet away from the field!

A girls softball hit a fence pole about a foot from me and stopped a quick foul ball from hitting me. (Thank you fence)

A fellow photographer had a pole vault pole land about a yard from him. That was a setup shot for a school picture.

About 30 years ago, I got run over by a motocross bike. (Ouch! Brused for a week or two.)

...and a Confederate soldier's rifle fell on my foot once at a reenactment. Even though they shoot blanks, I'm never in front of an active cannon. Maybe a Canon here and there but not a cannon. LoL

A shot put of any size is not something I'd ever want! Nope, never!

I forgot that I did get knocked on my butt by an official (football) who was running backwards. I was in his box shooting the play and forgot where I was standing. Camera went flying, but had it on a strap. Glasses went the other way and I went the other. Good thing that I have padding and heavy bones too, lol. At age 70 the bones don't heal that fast anymore. Plus now this season I have a ICD pacemaker installed. Just have to be a little careful this year.

Hockey Action too, just have to keep an eye on puck when in the players bench.

This looked to be pretty tight quarters, but the photographer was well within throwing distance downrange. Got to pay attention!

I've been chased half way across the width of a football field by a javelin caught in the wind, and I had a friend who lost a son to an errant hammer thrown at a high school meet half a century ago. A track meet, or any sporting event, is not a place to let your attention wander!
