I just took a major leap from canon 50D to a 5DR S. I have 4 lenses to play with. Canon E lenses 100-400mm L 4.5-5.6, 70-30mm 4.0-5.6, 28-135 3.5-5.6 and one Tamron 60mm macro 2.0 .

What am I missing for lenses to get the most out of the 5DR s?

Any EFs lens will not mount on your camera as you know. If you have the budget the EF 11-24mm Canon would be a perfect lens for this camera. It is currently the best wide angle lens available from any manufacturer any where. This combination from what I can see would be incredible. No personal experience, way too rich for me, with it but from reviews you cannot go wrong.

After you have some hands-on time with this camera, I'd sure be interested in hearing of your experiences. Some have written that the 50 MP receptors are, in a way, too big for most photographers, as they tend to magnify imperfections in photos, especially when hand held. It's also been reported that today's lenses frequently aren't up to the task of delivering enough lines of resolution for these cameras. Are these concerns exaggerated? Having a 50 mp camera is enticing, even though I don't make huge prints, since it enables closer cropping. But, I suspect that, as with all things in life, there are trade-offs.

Thanks to everyone for the informative commits. I’d like to say that there was nothing wrong with my canon 50D. I’ve learned a lot using it. I just wanted an upgrade. I also give to United Way, Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army. I also shop at Goodwill so my conscious is good with this purchase.
From what I’ve read I like the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM and the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM. I also like the flexibly of being able change focal lengths within a lens vs a prime lens. Now need to save some pennys!
Also is there a quality alternative to canon L lenses?
Again, Thank You
Chris

70-30mm 4.0-5.6??? Never heard of this one either. Even if you turn it around to 30-70mm I've never heard of it. Maybe 24-70mm??

I think he means the 70-300. I have this, but don't use it much at all. Has no IS, and at an effective 460mm, that would be rather useful. Just added some L glass to my collection, but this is still my longest focal length, so may come in useful for astro stuff...

I am sure that there will be those who will tell you that this lens or that one is equal to or superior to, for less money, the equivalent Canon lens, and they may even be correct in some instances. Just the same, overall I believe that the Canon lens is the better choice. Especially the newer ones, which are the ones you would want to upgrade to anyway. You spent quite a bit of money on a camera with exceptional image quality capabilities. Shortcuts on lenses wouldn't seem to be the best approach IMO. The two lenses you mention, the 16-35 L and the 24-70 L can be had for less if you go with the f/4 versions. As I recall, they both have slightly better rankings for image quality then the f/2.8 ones do. I have both of those lenses (f/4) and unless lowlight or DOF are real considerations I can assure you that they will give you excellent results.

Sounds like an over the top, pointless criticism of something that is only of concern to the OP.

Congratulations on your new Canon. I am shooting the 5DMK II along with 24-70 and 70-200, both f2.8.

My next lense with probably be the 16-36 f4. I have read many good comments about it.

That's my take too you purchase a highend camera and then someone trys to talk you putting low end lenses on that camera and maybe the intentions are well meant or maybe not? Canon has a list on there site of some of the recommended lenses for this very camera, what surprised me was the 24-100mm f4 was not recommended; but I like this lens it works very well on my 5d series and my 7D it's very sharp for these two cameras.

IMO there is no better lens for your new canon than the new L series. They are designed with at a minimum the new 120 MP camera in mind so should not even be breathing hard to handle the 5DS series of cameras. They are of rugged construction and all made in Japan and none are farmed out to China or Thailand or whatever. Canon has the algorithms of the cameras to ensure optimum operation and the glass is second to none with the cutting edge developments that even Leitz, Zeis and others have a hard time matching. Now this said there are some lenses Canon does not make and many Sigma and other lenses are incredible in their own right and I have also used them but on a 1 to 1 basis the new L lenses cannot be beat.

It is only your business if you "want an upgrade". You do not have to justify, or defend any purchase--gas inspired or whatever---to anybody on this site. Enjoy your new camera, and all the best lenses you decide to buy. Have fun.
