I am a true amateur who just likes to take pictures. I try to get different perspectives of the ordinary landscapes, people, portraits…. a little bit of everything whatever catches my eye. I consider myself a jack of all trades master of none type of guy.

I just took a major leap from canon 50D to a 5DR S. I have 4 lenses to play with. Canon E lenses 100-400mm L 4.5-5.6, 70-30mm 4.0-5.6, 28-135 3.5-5.6 and one Tamron 60mm macro 2.0 .

What am I missing for lenses to get the most out of the 5DR s?

For me it would be a 28mm prime. Or maybe a 35mm. Also a wide angle zoom. Maybe the 10-22 Canon. I sure love mine.

Hello cdavis:
If you go up to Canon's site and look up the information they have posted for the lenses they recommend for the 5DR'S and decide from that list you'll be good to go!

I'm not a Canon guy, but they have a couple lenses I'm envious of: The new 11-24 f/4 L, and the new 100-400 f/5.6.

Looks like you have the 100-400, so go for the ultra wide. Your new 5DRs deserves it.

To get the most out of that camera you want the newest and best quality lenses Canon offers. I'm not referring to the best focal length coverage, but the best image quality, which is what that camera is all about. As far as zooms go, the EF 100-400 L II, the EF 70-200 f/2.8 L II, the EF 24-70 (either the f/4 L or f/2.8 L II versions) and the EF 16-35 (again, either the f/4 L or f/2.8 L II version) are all good choices. As far as primes, the just introduced EF 35mm f/1.4 L II is worth consideration. Those are just the newest ones. There are others. If you really are serious about getting the most out of that camera's 50 megapixel sensor then you will want to consider upgrading your lenses. Keep in mind that the 5DR S is not as capable in low light as a 5DIII or 6D, although probably an improvement over the 50D. Faster lenses will be a plus under those conditions. As far as what focal range you want, I'm sure you can answer that for yourself with a little thought, but your question was how to get the best out of that particular camera. One big answer is to have the best quality lenses available, provided you have the budget for them.
Have fun!

Canon E lenses??? what's that? Canon makes EF lenses and EF-s lenses. Sometimes people refer to Canons best lenses as 'L' lenses because they have the L designation in the model number and they have the best glass Canon makes inside of them.

70-30mm 4.0-5.6??? Never heard of this one either. Even if you turn it around to 30-70mm I've never heard of it. Maybe 24-70mm??

In any case, the holy grail of lenses for amateurs is the 24-70mm, 70-200mm, 16-35mm (all f/2.8). You have a long lens, 100-400mm so you got that covered. But if you want to do Macro, you should get the Canon 100mm Macro. But if you find that you never do Macro, don't waste your money.

Crap! LFingar beat me to it.

The 10-22mm lens I mentioned is an EF-s lens that won't work on your new "playtoy". Have fun with whatever you decide.

What's missing lens wise...nothing. Just go out an practice to fine tune your skills. That's the biggest thing that most people are missing...not gear.

CD, first, the formalities.., what was your old camera not doing. What that does the new camera do that you couldn't do with the old model T? You could have spent that money on groceries and eliminate world hunger!!!!!!! LoL
CD, I'm trying to sound like all the nay-sayers..., how am I doing?!?! Probably failing miserably!!
Hey, good for you, very nice camera. On all my cameras, my work horse is the 24-105L.
For portraits, I'm gonna suggest that you use a single focus point and always have it on the eye.
Do activate the focus point orientation. It will use the same corresponding focus point/group whether shooting portrait or landscape. Call Canon if you need help with that.
Congrats, very nice camera. ;-)

I shall confirm LFingers commentary. The 5DsR is an amazing tool. The problem with having a Super Car you can't buy tires at Sears. The point is that the sensor is demanding in that most of the glass that can be used on a 500D under utilizes the 5DsR sensor. I know a guy that that basically uses the camera with the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM. What a team I have seen some great images.

Some one mentioned the 10-22 which is a EFs mount and is no-compatible. Jim Quest has directed you to the web site that shows some options. The 10-440 you have is a vr-1 and is lacking compared to the newer vr-2

You mean that these fancy new Canon DSLR's don't have left or right eye or face recognition built in?

I had to go to the spa. Thinking of your lenes. I would think that the largest deficiency is in the main shooting area that I use. I as SS use the EF f/4 24-105 L. I found it the most cost effective lens for ME. I also like the EF f/4 24-70 L. It is newer technology and has good reviews perhaps a little more expensive than the 24-105. I scream in side think of the EF 28-135 going the 5D$R. I would not use it even on the 50. but that is just me. Like tennis shoes with an Armani suit.
