Agree with the comments above on Bryan Peterson. "Understanding Exposure" and "Understanding Composition" are a great resource. I go back to them all the time.

If you want specifics for your particular make and model of camera, read the owner's manual. Keep it with you and pull it out when a specific situation come up. I keep mine in my camera bag at all times.

I was going to say Youtube is a great resource but Orrie Smith beat me to it.

Very good suggestions here. I would add David Pogue's Missing Manual Digital Photography. David Busch also is author to the Dummies book on Digital Photography. David Pogue has always been excellent at teaching audiences of different levels. When he explains something most readers will get it.

The current issue of the British magazine Digital Camera World [$15], available at Barnes & Noble, gives a back-to-basics survey of cameras and related subjects. I was very impressed with the clarity and simplicity, the lack of jargon. It did me some good even after 60 years of shooting.

For photography principal I agree with other postings Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson. An online course that looks good is at Photographylife. Look at the right side for photography courses. http://photographylife.com To learn about your camera I'd recommend go to creative Live John Greengo goes through various cameras. I bought 2 of his courses and like them.

Can someone recommend a good beginners guide to understanding your DSLR camera? A book that covers essentials such as iso, different f stops and aperture. I'm looking for an easy to understand book that will get me familiar with a new camera, and one that explains all of the aforementioned subjects, as well as other areas of importance in photography.

Give us the make and model, and we'll recommend some books. Go to Amazon and read reviews from people who bought books for that camera.

There is a guy named Michael Andrew that does amazing instructional videos!!!! He does them for most cameras - go to: michaelthemaven.com and look under "products". Buy the one for your camera, (they are about $30ish) The videos are easy to watch and learn. You will not be disappointed. In a couple of hours you will feel like a pro.

For flash photography get Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Flash Photography". It's an excellent book with lots of sample photos.
