I have a d-7100 and love it. I had a d90 gave it up for the 7100 and never looked back. It is the photographer, the lens that make the photos.
Good luck..

I have had my D90 for a few years now, & as an amateur I have been happy with the results. Can anyone give an opinion on whether it will be worth me laying out $1,000 to upgrade to the D7200?

The 7200 is at least 2 generations newer, faster, with more pixels, wifi etc.... But are the differences enough to justify the cost? All opinions / advice gratefully received.

Still have my D90 I keep my 150-600 on it... Also have a D7000 not a bad camera although i have to fine tune the focus on all lens's used with it... Santa brought me a D7200... Love it.... I usually keep my 16-300 Tamron on it.... all fine cameras... Probably sending the 7000 back to be checked out...

In a word YES I feel it is a good upgrade :)

I upgraded from a D90 to a D7200 about 4 months ago. The camera locks on the dials took me a while to get used to, but I am glad they are there because when I would put my D90 into its carry case, the dials sometimes changed setting. The dial locks prevent that problem

As for as picture quality, I am quite pleased. I do make use of the normal increased ISO when in low light and the noise is acceptable to me.

I also have now switched to dual SD cards. One card gets the JPGs and one card gets the Raw files. This has proven to work well for me.

I did have to get used to formatting both cards when I am ready to erase the cards.

Thanks Buckeye Billy, in particular the side-by-side comparison is helpful

Thanks to everyone for their input & advice. The consensus so far leans towards the 7200, but with some advising against. It is also useful to hear some alternative views / suggestions & ideas... I'm loving the ability to get advice through the forum from "real" people, rather than looking at other forms of online review, many of which are bogus

Do you want a newer camera? Can You afford a newer camera? Are you looking for someone to talk you into buying a newer camera? I am thinking that you are looking for someone who will make you take that plunge. Those are the questions that pop into my head when I see questions like yours. I am NOT flaming anyone, just stating what pops into my head.

JustMePB : Let me explain the genesis of my question to put your mind at rest.... whilst discussing a photography course at a local camera store, a staff member recommended that I should really be thinking about the 7200. Now he is clearly biased, as he wants to make a sale... so I posed the question to the hog, to help assess whether the guy at the store was giving good advice, or just being an active sales person...And yes, I can afford a camera, but won't spend unless its worth it

I was merely stating what pops into my head when I see theses kinds of questions. If i offended, please accept my apology.

I went from D80 to D7100 and D7200 because I wanted newer and could getting (what I considered) a good deal from Costco.

On another note , I see you are in Phillie. I formerly lived halfway between there and the Jersey Shore.

I have both.. I use both. I purchased the 7200 because of the buffer size. Funny thing is I really like both cameras and carry both with me. I can say that there is a big difference in how quickly I can fire off RAW photos on the 7200 vs the D90 but honestly is it worth the difference. Really depends on what your needs are.

A significant reason is the lack of weather sealing on the D90. Before I got a 7100, I used to bring out my old D200 when it rained.

UPDATE : I have taken some time to evaluate my options, bought a 35mm prime, which I love, but am taking the plunge & taking delivery of the 7200 tomorrow.... on balance it offers many benefits for me, not least the performance in low light & poor weather. Thanks to everyone for your input.

if the urge is there, the need is there, go for it. It really depends on what you want to do with your photography quest. if you have done all you want to do with the d90 and are ready to grow a little, buy the d7200. if you are satisfied with the quality and control you have with the d90, stick with it. if you buy, look at Nikon (I believe they are having a 10 per cent off sale on refurbished right now), B&H Photo, or adorama for a refurbished body and save a few dollars.
