Thanks Nikonian, this is really helpful, I will spend some time in FAQ section to find answers to my questions. I am liking this forum a lot. On another forum that I visit often, Cast Boolits, the members there started a thread which was totally made up of acronyms related to casting, reloading, shooting, which is very helpful for we who are less familiar with some terms and abbreviations.

Thank you Ray, in just the couple minutes I have been on here I have learned that ILC means Interchangable Lens Camera. Now if I can only learn what the other acronyms stand for I will be on my way up.
Tell us what the others are and we'll translate! Welcome!

Hi, my name is Kenneth. I just become aware of the existence of this forum today and signed up for the news letter and the forum. I am a novice photographer but am also a enthusiast and looking to become a better photographer. As I read information about this hobby and read Owner Reviews for cameras and equipment, I see many 2, 3, 4 letter acronyms for photo related terms that I do not understand the meaning of. Is there a short, or long list of common acronyms on this site or elsewhere that I can refer to, to help me better understand what I am reading?

I have been a member for some time now and I have found the use of acronyms very irritating, most of them originated in the US so they cannot even be worked out. A typical example is "IQ" which here the UK is short for "intelligence quotient" whereas on this site it is short for "image quality". There are many others which I am gradually learning but generally it would not be very hard to type the whole phrase.

Add to that the different names and therefore different acronyms used by the camera manufacturers, and your confusion is complete.
Example: What Olympus calls "IS - Image stabilization" is called "VR - Vibration Reduction" by others.
What I like to do writing (or typing), is to spell out the complete acronym, with each word capitalized, and only use the actual acronym following that.
Hey Kenneth - just in case you don't locate its meaning easily "GWAC" means "guy with a camera" and has the connotation that while having a camera, he likely doesn't really know how to use it.
Typically these are people who get in the professional's way during a wedding and generally think that good gear alone will make for good photos.
Good Luck and welcome to the site. Shoot a lot, post photos and ask for suggestions then shoot a bunch more.
Ignore the trolls (there aren't that many) and you will learn a great deal here - I certainly have.
Cheers

Ken, welcome to the Hog. In about a week you will have developed a LHR(lovehaterelationship) here, that means you're normal(N)!
BUT, in all of photography, there is ONLY one acro you need to know, all the others will eventually fall into place. The acro I speak of is G.W.A.C!
DONT be that GUY!!!!!
Again, welcome! ;-)

I have an Olympus OMD, I often wondered what "IS" meant!!
Seriously though I agree with your method of using acronyms after the initial use of the whole phrase.

Olympus may be making it more difficult too: Yesterday they released this new 300mm lens and I now have a very watery mouth that exceeds the capabilities of both my purse and my piggy-bank....
Now, what are they/we going to call it? IBIS - In-Body Image Stabilization? ILIS - In-Lens Image Stabilization? This lens has ILIS and can use IBIS as well... Hmmmm...ILBIS? IBLIS? Miracle worker?
Well, guess I don't have to worry about it: Close to $4000. I cannot just shake out of the cherry-tree or scrape off my back. Dreams are still free, I will dream along...
Check this site..It will help you with your concerns about Acronyms and terms. Welcome aboard.
