The .40 is a bastard round. After a gun battle in which the snipers showed up late because they were otherwise occupied and several agents were taken out of the fight, the FBI decided the 9x19 was not the round for them. They could not get Congress to approve the .45 ACP because the Army had gone to the 9mm NATO standard--as every nation in the free world had. The .40 was adopted because some agents could not handle the 10.
I have been retired for 17 years and spent six of those working in the firearms business. When I carried during my career it was generally a .38Spl or .357magnum. When I went on raids it was a 12ga with 00 buck. And we carried .30-30 carbine. But I never felt under gunned. I am generally packed with a .38 because I am having holster problems with my Beretta 92.
My son carries a Glock .40 cal at work. For personal carry he has a Glock 19 and uses Hornady Critical Defense ammunition. He knows that for real "stopping power" a 12 with 00 or slug is the answer.
The Sig is a beautiful weapon, but the Glock will go bang when you pull the trigger. The SEALs do not use pistols as a primary weapon--but when they do, they use head shots. If they were going up, .45 ACP outperforms .40, as does .357 magnum, .357 Sig, and .41AE.
No, the 9mm is not a toy. Parabellum means for war. It has been the standard for most armies in the world done its share of filling graveyards.
