Beyond Compare is a very powerful program that allows you to sync folders and files (even cells in two Excel spreadsheets). I use it a great deal at work. In order to have it sync automatically, you need to create a script and have it run via Windows scheduler. Other sync programs - such as GoodSync have a built in scheduler that can be set for a desired number of minutes or hours - or whenever a file gets added to a folder.

I have 3 backups including a 5 gig WD and Apple's airport utility. I recently bought Carbonite for 3 years at a deal and it has backed up my Mac and photos. I can access and restore photos and docs from it at any time. I just recently shot some pics and processed them in LR and Carbonite already had backed them up automatically.
I've used Carbonite also, but it's PC software crashes my computer more than all the other (considerable) software loaded onto it. Now I'm doing backup on my own cloud (see QNAP.COM).

CORRECTION: I've used Carbonite also, but its PC software crashes my computer more than all the other (considerable) software loaded onto it. Now I'm doing back on my own cloud (see QNAP.com).

What would be the best approach to backing up my photos automatically to the external hard drive? What software are you using for an automatic backup? (I would be backing up my photo folders in the computer to the external drive) I see that Acronis backup software now comes with WD external drives. I was told that version of Acronis saves everything to their propitiatory compressed file types though which would not be good. Does anyone know if Windows 7 or 10 has it's own backup software? Thanks a bunch and wishing everyone a happy new year!

Windows 10 can do backup but because it is within Windows it is possible it can be compromised. It's like Windows System Restore in that sense.
My professors all recommend two programs: Rollback Rx and Drive Cloner Rx. Rollback is
VERY fast and I've had issues where it got my computer back up and running in seconds. It doesn't protect from hardware failiure that's why they also recommend Drive Cloner which I run once a week.
Between these two I've recovered from ransomware attacks, a bad update, and so much more. I think they have 50% off sale so check it out.
