Using Backup Software?

What would be the best approach to backing up my photos automatically to the external hard drive? What software are you using for an automatic backup? (I would be backing up my photo folders in the computer to the external drive) I see that Acronis backup software now comes with WD external drives. I was told that version of Acronis saves everything to their propitiatory compressed file types though which would not be good. Does anyone know if Windows 7 or 10 has it's own backup software? Thanks a bunch and wishing everyone a happy new year!

I've probably used every sync/backup utility on the market for Windows in the past 15 years. While Goodsync is pretty good option, my favorite is Sync Now Pro. It is the most versatile of the current options. Can run in real time or do highly configurable scheduled back ups. Has bandwidth and processor scaling. The paid version is about $20 for a single license.

I use Syncbackfree which is freeware but very versatile.

Mine is set up for automatically backing up important folders to two separate external drives each day and a full backup weekly to an external drive that is only connected for the backup.
The software has many program features making it very versatile for backing up exactly what you want - when you want.

SyncToy is a free program that is ultra simple, easy to program and works great. It would do a good job for what you want.

I like rsync. It is a somewhat geeky utility from Linux but runs in Windows under Cygwin. It only backs up files that have changed so is highly efficient. It is free.

I have a iMAC so I can't comment on software for a PC. When I had a PC, I used a backup program that saved everything in one massive binary file. To extract a file, the program would use the index portion to find the file. Somehow, the index portion got corrupted and I couldn't extract any files, it was a total loss. This was 10 years ago, so the photo loss was not that great, but I have stayed away from backed up binary files ever since.

I have 3 backups including a 5 gig WD and Apple's airport utility. I recently bought Carbonite for 3 years at a deal and it has backed up my Mac and photos. I can access and restore photos and docs from it at any time. I just recently shot some pics and processed them in LR and Carbonite already had backed them up automatically.

I think the OP specifically asked about software for doing LAN external hard drive back ups versus cloud backups on a Windows system.

It's good to hear about cloud alternatives even if the response is a bit OT. I think the distinction between LAN and Cloud will begin to dissolve as high speed broadband gets faster and more widely available.
I have Macs and use Apple's Time Machine. I also use Chronosync specifically for work files. It's available for Windows.

Windows 10 has an even worse backup procedure and no assurance that files will be recoverable if the backup doesn't function perfectly.

One of my computer gurus has strongly recommended "Beyond Compare" by Scooter Software. It's $50, but you can actually compare each individual file on the main disk and the back-up disk. I'm planning to buy it once I've recovered from the cost of his latest recovery job!
