That is true. After the second time I sent the D600 in I asked for a D610 as a replacement. I have to admit the lady immediately said, "yes," which kinda floored me. I had to return the D600 before they sent me the D610. Surprisingly, all they wanted back was the camera, so I was able to keep the battery, charger and everything else that was originally in the D600 box.

I understand it was China who really pushed Nikon to replace D600s, they would not let Nikon sell any D600s in their country.
That is true. After the second time I sent the D6... (show quote)

The reset must be possible with the right kind of software. The memory location that store the shutter actuation count must be rewritable otherwise it can't increase. But it's whether Nikon wants to reset it or not is up to them.I think if the shutter is replaced than the count should be reset.

The reliable and accurate way to check shutter count on a Nikon - look at the EXIF data, every image is tagged with the current shutter count in the EXIF of the image.

As you say, the filename increment is reset after 9,999 ;)

When I sent my D600 in under service advisory to replace the shutter mechanism, it had over 9000 shutter counts. When I got the camera back, it showed much less shutter count - either around 1000 or 2000 - I don't remember the exact count. Asked Nikon about this but got no straight answer from them. At least I know that the shutter count number can be changed - how? I do not know.

At least, the new shutter mechanism works great. Only need cleaning every couple of thousand shuts.

Interesting. They repaired two D600's for me, and in each case the shutter count was higher when I got them back.

Ive had many shutters and mirror boxes replaced from 3rd party companies and they have always reset the shutter count.
I wish Nikon would do the same.
Usually replacement of the shutter box requires to replace the shutter mechanism as well, so not unusual at all there.

I like the idea of continuing the shutter count as it shows how much use the camera has gotten - not just the shutter use. I'd hate to buy a used car that had the odometer reset just because the engine was replaced.

How about one the odometer was reset without the engine being replaced?

The only valid time to reset the odometer is when the entire car is being replaced. :D
