Hi,

Like Doug, I went through their course in the early 70s and learned a lot. I think it's a good course assuming the digital version is up to the same standards as the old film version. Take care & ...

I was not real impressed with NYIP and my 3 year allowance to complete the course just ended. Their printed material is good, the tests are good too. As noted above, the videos were boring and in a monotone. With my interest being in landscape and nature photography I found too large a percentage of the course devoted to portraits and weddings.
I also thought the photos sent to them for critique had very short and lame comments. I did not complete the course.

For a well-rounded thorough course touching all the varieties of photography you may decide to do and a lot more, this was the best photographic thing I ever did early 80s. For those who don't know NYIP, where have you been? They have a good reputation and a history over 100 years !

I started the course some years ago, but did not finish. Good aspects were that some of the feedback comments were useful and that the course offered a good basic conceptual framework for assessing your photography. Less positive aspects were: (1) Too often the comments were IMO fairly shallow ("nice picture") and didn't help advance my skills. (2) SLOW PROCESS! It seemed to take an unnecessarily long cycle time from when I sent in one 'lesson' to when I received any feedback. (3) At that time, their instructional material had very much a 'low tech' feel to it' -- like it'd been developed decades earlier and never updated. Did not inspire confidence.

Not cheap for sure.... Don't know if the government would put $$$$ towards the price if you are a vet?

Believe they were one of the first to do so after WWII, also one of the first to broaden their reach from the original brick and mortar establishment since not everyone could afford to go to N.Y. Check their credentials, approval by state of N.Y. etc.
I've never really heard of anyone who finished the course and graduated as I did then complain. We get out of anything what we put into it. Well worth the time and cost!

I agree with Jenny. I took the course back in the 80s when one submitted his/her work by US mail and received the critiques on cassette tapes. I supplemented the "distance learning" by taking classes at the local state university which had a Certificate program. I also took several with Bryan Peterson. (He was based in Oregon back then). The university classes were led by adjunct professional photographers (Brooks graduates & a 40 year AP vet). One of the assignments, for example, was to cover the campaigns, so I followed Dukakis & Jesse Jackson on campaign stops. Bush refused to visit. Learning is a personal responsibility.

Best move I ever made... took the NYIP mail correspondence course in the early Seventies...27 chapters sent to me over a few months. Sent the assignments in. Got back a written critique, a critique on a cassette tape and the next chapter.

Well, best move after sending my money to Hong Kong to buy a Topcon Unirex 35mm camera.

Yup, yup, yup. Just finishing. Only have assignments to submit. All coursework done. From course content, I was able to start a side business as a sports photographer. Still learning though. Currently, using knowledge obtained to shoot various events,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, for pay. Amazingly, things starting taking off before I even finished the course. Good luck pal. Just do it.

Halfway through now. Have one more year to complete but my goal is to finish by March. Very in depth and, yes, still a lot of printed reference material, which I love! Having fun doing the assignments. I'm taking my time, but have received very quick responses to submitted assignments and they've been very insightful.
Some of this material will be redundant if you've acquired the basic knowledge of the craft (i.e. exposure, dof, etc.) but still learn something new along with the "review " of the basics.
I have no regrets and recommend.

Thanks to all. Grnway, since you're in the middle of it, what do you think about the comments about it not being updated in quite a while and the lessons long and boring?

Yes, took the first class. It might be me but I kept falling asleep listening and watching the video. I never did finish it. Very mono-tone.

I took the Professional Photography class as well and am just finishing up. They did recently redo many of the manuals and videos, I paid extra to get the new ones as I had already received the old ones. The new ones are an improvement; I suspect Bobbee had the old versions.

I am quite pleased with the course. I have been involved in photography on a casual basis, no real formal training though, since my teen years back in the 50s and 60s and thought I had a pretty fair knowledge of photography. I feel I learned as much in the first three months or so of the NYIP course as I did in 50 years of casual photography. To me the $1400 or so dollars was well spent.
