impersonating a police officer?

You're only impersonating a police officer if you represent yourself as such in person, in uniform or other apparently official representation. Merely saying you're "a state trooper" doesn't qualify. But it sure helps scare off the crooks and scammers. (I am a retired state trooper, by the way--really)

Our Police Station provides a special location inside their building to make transactions like this. That's the only place I would ever meet anyone from Craig's List

I've sold many photographic items using CraigsList. I NEVER use my own email address or texts from my cell phones. I just respond to their question or comment using the CraigsList address. They are fishing for your email. Good luck.

No big deal to text from your cell phone. If they have the same area code as you, then they probably live locally which means that you can meet them somewhere safe. When I see an area code from some other state, I know it's a scam.

There have been mention on the internet of Police Stations who offer their lobby for Craigslist Transactions. My Craigslist listings say as much.

But then, nothing matches the security and broad coverage of eBay.

I have been selling film cameras, equipment and other goods for about 20 years with no problem.

I look for:

Good feedback... nothing below 98% positive buyer or seller
Start Price with Reserve and often BIN...

I've 100% feedback myself.

Fraud is much easier to spot (what little there is) on eBay and avoid. Hackers and Spammers are quite obvious (again very little of that activity).

People come to my house for everything I sell on Craigslist...from truck to ATV to smaller things.

Most people in Idaho know that nerarly all home owners have multiple weapons at hand so there is no fear.

But then I never got fishy responses like those. I wouldn't reply to them.

I used to collect money, and repossess cars (well Trucks) for a finance company, north of Sand Point Idaho to the Canadian Border...

Great fun!!! Yeah, I used to be Young, Stupid and Immortal, and with over five shots of Tequila.... Invisible... You know the shirt?

In our town, the local police stations (substations) and fire departments have been opened for Craig's list shoppers and sellers. We are encouraged to make our sales or purchases in their parking lots rather than shopping malls, etc. It has cut 90% of the crime related to Craig list scams. My nearest substation is much closer than a strip mall and much safer. Give it a try.

CRAIGSLIST allows you to dispose of items locally. Would you really want to try and sell a used washing machine on eBay? How much would the shipping be? I sold several large items on CRAIGSLIST, if they didn't have a pickup truck, then how would they carry the merchandise? I've also sold smaller one of a kind items, bits and pieces. Only the people who know or use those items show up. As always, my policy is cash on delivery.

OS, one, craigslist protects your email by going through their server. So, you'll always get an email from XXX@craigslist.com. They will see similar.

Secondly, under no circumstances agree to meet at your house. NEVER do that. Always make arrangements to meet at a public place, like a restaurant with a well lit parking lot. And, you park as close to the front door as possible.

Great suggestions depending on what you are selling. I have sold a lot of bricks, yard rocks, lumber, sliding glass doors etc. on craigslist and was not going to carry 1000 bricks to a public place. It does pay to be careful and I do not disagree with what you are saying but what you are saying does not make sense for everything for sale. I have also never had any problem selling things at my house from craigslist. I too have had a lot of scammers but ignored them. Be cautious is the key word.

With cell phones and people moving .. area codes are not as reliable any more .. I have had my cell for 17 years now with the same number.. lived in Pa. and Maine .. the phones area code is from New Hampshire

The answer to this is simple. I have sold many photo items on craigslist and I simply tell people that I will meet them at a Starbucks. I never give out my address. If people are really interested this will not be a problem. Of course cash only.

I'd offer to meet them at the local police station parking lot and see if they even bother to reply.
