Can't Nikon decide on which battery can work in all three cameras?
In addition to different space and capacity requirements which camera makers can control, the Li-Ion battery technology is improving. Also, the maker also must comply with every-changing governments' requirements, which includes shipping. Example: I think Japan recently reduced the maximum allowable Li-Ion capacities. In other words, making a common battery for a family of camera is probably harder than it appears. We, the consumer, ends up with paying for this with higher prices and a bag of different batteries to juggle. Be happy that some of our gear uses standard-sized AA & AAA batteries. It could be worse!

Absolutely not. EN-EL3e is totally different from the EN-EL15

How about giving the rest of us non Nokon users a heads up with a title like "Why does Nikon have so many different battery sizes?"
Why yes why indeed did you leave your title so nebulous?

That's one thing I like about my Canon cameras. I have a 7D, 7DII and a 5DIII and all take the same battery. I believe some of the other Canons do too.

They all use different batteries?

Why ? Can't Nikon decide on which battery can work in all three cameras?

But the Rebels take 3 different batteries. The 1D's take different batteries. The SX50 and 60 take different batteries. So what is the point you are trying to make?

You really don't know? Canon does the same thing. It's all about after market sales. If each battery is different then when you need batteries you'll have to buy that particular one.

According to my tests, they are universal...universally bad, that is.

I had the same issue. Now my D800 and D810 take the same batteries. Much better for me.

Sorry. I forgot Canons had batteries also. Will remember next time to be more specific.

Well, if one type battery fit all, then, if needed, you could switch batteries in an emergency to a different Camera...

Have you ever wondered why it is necessary to have different wheels on different cars, even within the same brand?

The truthful answer is marketing and generating income.

My Nikon DSLR's have a battery feature that tells me how much of a charge is left on a battery, number of shots before depletion & the rough age of the battery (1-4 with 1 being new)

Such is life. If you stay within the evolutionary range of a particular camera series, chances are good that the same battery will be used in most of them. That was the case with Canon's EOS 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D... We used all of those at the school portrait company where I used to work, and it was very easy to keep a supply of batteries and chargers on hand.

DO put an in-service date on each battery you buy! That helps estimate the amount of charge a battery will take, or the number of exposures it will make before it should be replaced.
