I have 3 Nikon cameras.

The D7000
The D5300
The P900

They all use different batteries?

Why ? Can't Nikon decide on which battery can work in all three cameras?

Designers and engineers want freedom to design a grip that fits the camera, and freedom to improve technology when new battery chemistries and constructions become available. They also want to minimize weight when they don't need as much energy...

Marketers want to be able to sell unique batteries at premium prices. Profit margins on cameras are slim. Profit margins on accessories are fat. So they want to sell you "genuine, certified" replacement batteries... and they want you to have to have three different battery sizes to replace!

Buy Wasabi batteries and chargers. They work.

Why don't you just buy cameras that use the same battery. That would solve your problem

At first, I thought JPL had asked a good question about buying cameras that used the same battery but then I had to ask myself this question: does one buy a battery because it works with the camera or does one buy a camera because it works with the battery?

My problem is probably not as common as others here.
I work for a university and we are in the process of updating 12 Canon cameras we maintain for students to use.
We have roughly 2 spare batteries per kit, so that makes about 36 batteries to deal with and try to keep charged.

For our other work, we shoot Nikon- we had a bazillion lenses when I started here and I like Nikon so we stayed with it..
We have 3 different batteries for them.
Also have 2 different P&S digital cameras available to loan.

You have 3 TOTALLY different series of cameras. A bridge camera with low power usage and low cost, small battery. A beginner level camera with a larger battery, but still with a cost factor involved. And a semi-pro body with the best battery technology applied for the longest battery life and optimized shots per charge.
Same reason different sized vehicles have different sized batteries as well. The right power for the job.

Such is life. If you stay within the evolutionary range of a particular camera series, chances are good that the same battery will be used in most of them. That was the case with Canon's EOS 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D... We used all of those at the school portrait company where I used to work, and it was very easy to keep a supply of batteries and chargers on hand.

DO put an in-service date on each battery you buy! That helps estimate the amount of charge a battery will take, or the number of exposures it will make before it should be replaced.

Yes, very annoying. They want the camera to get as many shots as practical, but they also have limited space for the battery. The trick is to chose used cameras based on their batteries. We have two D750's, a D5100, and a D5300. Those four cameras use just two different batteries. I also have a D40 and D70, each with it's own battery style.

It's the same with oil filters. Why do manufacturers have to change the oil filter from one year to another? Now my son and I have the same make and model car, so I buy just one model oil filter, spark plugs, etc.
