That's why I like getting refurbs from Cameta. They give you a one-year warranty with refurbs. On the other hand, I've never had to use a camera warranty, and I've been using DSLR's since about 1970. Don't worry about it.

I agree, been using DSLR's for over 40 years, never used either a camera or lens warranty.

I remember 1970. Learned programming on a PDP-8 computer which had a whopping 64kb of memory - but took up a whole room with an elevated floor for ventilation to keep everything cool. Programs were entered via punch-cards. I went with my faculty advisor for a visit to an HP plant outside of Boston and they showed us a prototype of a new thing called a "pocket calculator" that could add, subtract, multiply, divide AND do square roots! It was AWESOME! It was going to be sold for $800. This device quickly made the slide rule obsolete, thus nullifying a skill many of us had painstakingly learned.

I don't believe they had digital cameras then! :)

Change "DSLR" to "SLR," and you won't need the time machine. :D

I remember when those calculators first came out. It was a big deal. I got an ad in the mail for one. The price was $400, and they gave you a nice briefcase if you bought one. I waited for the price to come down.

You did not do your homework. Cameta sells refurbed lenses and they all carry a 1 year warranty.
Do not expect to have issues with a refurbed lens because they have been thoroughly checked by the importer and released for sale only if they fit their specs.

I just ordered, but have not yet received, a refurbished Nikon D7100 body, on Amazon, and the seller is Adorama. Includes only a standard 90-day warranty.

Normally, there is an option, on a new item, to purchase extended warranty as well as accidental damage coverage. However, Amazon does not offer such on “refurbished”. Adorama said to contact Square Trade, who said they don’t offer anything, and, in turn said to check with Amazon.

Amazon suggested a 3rd party vendor on their site, “Canopy Camera Protection Plan for used/refubished products”, with 2-, 3- and 4-year options. The company is called “Asurian”.

Has anyone heard of or used this? Are they reliable? Or has anyone purchased extended coverage for their used or refurbished items from any other source?

It's interesting that you have bought a camera, NOW your asking if you did OK. The lesson I hope you learned was, "you ask questions first, not after you buy". And just why are you asking now, if your not happy, you plan to return it if the warranty is not long enough or is it that after you bought, now you are having second thoughts? Interesting question that really did not even need to be asked NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good luck with your new camera, it is a nice one but please ask first next time. Or, as a boy scout leader once said, "plan your work and then work your plan".

I would've bought from Cameta for the one year, BUT in THIS case I had $500 in Amazon gift card credit and the body was "sold by Adorama". This allows me to get it without having to spend any of my own money. I would much rather have new, otherwise. Or refurb from Cameta. For the next one, definitely. All I have to do now is get SD cards.

Appreciate all the advice. Basically, don't worry, don't bother, it would be wasted money. If I return this to Amazon, I'll just get the credit back.

Why don't you call Adorama and see if they will sell you a square trade warranty, explain your Amazon story. Worth a try, the worst is that they will not do it.

You did not read my initial comment thoroughly. I would have bought from Cameta, had I not cared about adding to my already super high credit card balance. If that wasn't the issue, I'd have added a couple of lenses and a Speedlight along with it.

But I had Amazon gift card credit, enough to cover the body. So, no outlay of my own cash and didn't have to use the credit card.

Yes, if I were to do it again and my financials were better, I'd do it differently.

Tried that first. They said not on refurbished. Said to contact Square Trade directly. ST said only on new. Oh well.

I bought a HP-35 in spring of 1975 for $300. They had just dropped the price $100. I still have it, I needed to get a new battery pack and the charger needs tweaking to work.

Why would you not buy from Adorama directly? I just purchased a refurbished D7100 and was offered a 3 year warranty over the phone but i never buy extended warranties, but it was available if I wanted it.
