Warranties for “Refurbished"

I just ordered, but have not yet received, a refurbished Nikon D7100 body, on Amazon, and the seller is Adorama. Includes only a standard 90-day warranty.

Normally, there is an option, on a new item, to purchase extended warranty as well as accidental damage coverage. However, Amazon does not offer such on “refurbished”. Adorama said to contact Square Trade, who said they don’t offer anything, and, in turn said to check with Amazon.

Amazon suggested a 3rd party vendor on their site, “Canopy Camera Protection Plan for used/refubished products”, with 2-, 3- and 4-year options. The company is called “Asurian”.

Has anyone heard of or used this? Are they reliable? Or has anyone purchased extended coverage for their used or refurbished items from any other source?

That's why I like getting refurbs from Cameta. They give you a one-year warranty with refurbs. On the other hand, I've never had to use a camera warranty, and I've been using DSLR's since about 1970. Don't worry about it.

I have also had a refurb from Cameta that came with a 90 day Nikon warranty and a 1 year Cameta warranty - did not need either one ;)

Just make sure you try everything as much as possible in the first 90 days ;)

Ditto to Don and Jerry. Just got a refurb Nikon P600 as a backup camera from Cameta. I buy used and refurbed from KEH, B&H, Adorama and others and have never been able to tell that I didn't have new equipment other than to check the shutter count, which was usually exceptionally low. Good luck!

1970? I don't think they even had pocket calculators back in 1970 ;)

I think you mean a SLR FILM camera right? ;)

OR... did you mean late 80's and you had one of these?

:D

If you care too much about extended warranty buy the D7200. When I buy refurbished I want to maximize the saving.

In the past i have purchased Refurbished from a camera dealer like Cameta, B&H and Adorama. Do not have any experience with Amazon and their extended warranty program. If you can return the camera to Amazon and get it from Cameta 90 day plus 1 year.

I would've bought from Cameta for the one year, BUT in THIS case I had $500 in Amazon gift card credit and the body was "sold by Adorama". This allows me to get it without having to spend any of my own money. I would much rather have new, otherwise. Or refurb from Cameta. For the next one, definitely. All I have to do now is get SD cards.

Appreciate all the advice. Basically, don't worry, don't bother, it would be wasted money. If I return this to Amazon, I'll just get the credit back.

I think it's OK to have 3 months warranty. It's enough. Chances are you don't have any problem.

I'm confident. Just nice to have the extra piece of mind. Factory refurb, at least Nikon techs checked everything out. With regular "used", you never really know.

Check with you're credit card company that you used to buy the camera many double the warranty period. Also Nikon may sell a warranty.

Today's cameras are largely electronic, if they are going to go bad, they are going to do so quickly, usually. 90 day warranty, that's what I get on most power tools, and, I have not taken one back yet. Relax, get your refurbished from Nikon and relax. I believe they have new D7100 for about 600.00. That would be the way I would go, go to Nikonusa.com. and relax.
