Not to muddy the water (too much) but depending on how much you'd pay for that kit lens, you might consider this Tamron 18-270 which I've heard goods things about as a great walk around lens. I may pick one up myself if I can find a good deal.

I have a Tamron 18-270 PZD. Its a nice lens for what it is, but as with most super zooms its soft at the long end, soft at the edges at most focal lengths, has the standard super zoom distortions and hunts in very low light. The DXOMark sharpness scores are very low. There are much better choices for a walk around with the 7D2, although they will undoubtedly have less reach. The Canon 18-135 STM comes to mind.

Thanks LFingar, other than the focusing are there any other learning curves to the 7D2 I've had other folks say its a difficult camera to learn.

If you want to get the absolutely best from it in all situations the learning curve is extensive. There are 7 different focus modes, 6 user adjustable tracking cases, 65 all cross type focus points and a gazillion set up options for incredible flexibility. The attached link is to Canon's 60 page 7D2 AF Setting Guidebook which will step you through choosing and using the focus modes and shooting cases. The link is below. The PDF download can be found on the lower left of the page. I find it strange that this Guide is not included with the camera.

Love the 18:135 STM lens. Came in a kit. First shot I took with mine right out of the box (Lucy is her name)

I've had mine for a year now and I'm still learning. I have to say that it seemed very daunting at first. Take one step at a time...learn it and use it....and then go on to something else. I'm sure there are options on it that you will never use. I like the camera a lot. It's built like a tank. I have that lens. It gives a very good range. It's a great walk around lens. Have fun and practice practice practice.

Before you pull the trigger(it is a fabulous camera) check out http://www.profeel.com for price. They will probably beat your quoted price. Authorized Canon dealer, NYC, expedited, fast free shipping, no tax unless you live inn NYC. I bought my 7D MII, 70 - 200 f/2.8 II, 24 - 70 f/2.8 II and other. Saved hundreds of dollars. Ask for Ester or David.

While I have no experience with them I'll take your word that they are a reliable authorized dealer. However with regard to your claim of saving hundreds of dollars I'm not so sure. Their listed prices for the 7D Mark II and accessories don't seem different from B&H prices.

By the way, you appear to live around 15 minutes from my house, and since I'm up in the Bridgewater/Somerville area very often we may have passed each other like two ships in the night.

Looking at Zoom lenses on their site I was surprised at their limited selection. For example, under Zoom lenses I don't see either the old or new 100-400 zoom lens. Think I'll stick with B&H and Adorama.

Which indicates that they actually are a "reliable authorized dealer". Manufacturer pricing policies being what they are, the advertising of big savings for the same item is almost always a red flag.

I also purchased the 18-135 STM lens with my 7D II as a new walk around lens. I am very happy with the lens. It has performed better than I even expected, and I use it extensively.

Hi,

When I said hundreds of dollars, I meant collectively for the mentioned items. I really did. You should call them and speak with them. Every time I did that, I was given a lower price than prices advertised by other authorized dealers, including B & H, whom I have dealt with for years. Here is a list of Canon authorized dealers. I love B & H too. http://downloads.canon.com/dealer/canonauthorizeddealer.pdf

Yes, we are in the same vicinity. I have found two lenses that cover most of my needs. They are expensive. I tend to hold off purchases until I can save and buy Canon L lenses, f/2.8. I've never been sorry. You can see my inventory at the bottom. They are expensive! The Canon 24 70 f/2.8 II and the Canon f/2.8 70 - 200 II. Fabulous!! When outside, I put on the extender for longer focal length.

I'd be happy to discuss with you. Send me a PM if interested.
Take care neighbor!
Mark

Listen, it's a kit lens. Not great, not bad, but ok for the hobbyist. I have one but seldom take it out of the bag, opting for the nifty fifty or the 70-300 or Big Joe, my Tamron 150-600. So, not a knock on it...enjoy it and with that camera body you will be happy.
