I personally like my 35mm f1.8 over my 50mm f1.8
Each has it's place, but I believe the OP wants info regarding choice of a 50.
For my enthusiast use and eye, I chose the Nikon 1.8 and I am pleased with my results. To spring for a 1.4 to gain 2/3rds of a stop would be a waste for me.

The 35mm 1.8 DX is a great lens-more versatile on a crop sensor camera than a 50mm.
Personally, I like my Nikon 50mm 1.8 on my D7000 very much. I don't plan on spending the kind of money to get to 1.4 since I rarely shoot an very low light.
Make everyone happy: buy the 50 and 35 1.8's for less than the price of a 50 1.4.

That's actually a very good plan. The 35 is a "Wide Normal" and a useful one -- street, indoor, landscape, etc.
I shot a bunch of low light with the 50 /1.8 and it did the job pretty well.

Oh, it was a very good plan, my wife thought I was brilliant by saving some money with that move.

I use a Nikkor 50mm 1.8 AF D on my 7100. It is a great lens and can be had for under $100.00 on ebay. Keep in mind it will be a 75mm equivalent on a crop sensor.

A 35mm will yield a 52.5mm angle of view in the DX mode and 68.25mm in the 1.3X mode whereas the 50 mm will yield a 75 mm angle of view in the DX mode and a 97.5 angle of view in the 1.3X mode. It depends on which would be of more use to you.
I would highly recommend the Nikon f1.8 or better yet the f1.4 if the budget allows it.
Good luck with which ever you choose.
I agree with brent46. I have the 50mm f1.8 AF D Nikon lens and it is a very nice lens for the D7100. I bought mine new from B&H for $113, but I think they are maybe $10 more now. Since your D7100 has a focus motor in the camera, the older D lenses work just fine. The 50 focuses fast, and is very sharp. As others have suggested, if you want more range, you can also get the 35mm f1.8 G lens, which I also own. However, I use the 50 much more than the 35 even though both give good images.
nikon 50mm 1.8mm is perfectly fine ..my friend just recently bought one and loved it..so i dragged mine out from the closet and began using it again and discovered how awesome the images are..you can't go wrong with this lens..35mm is good for landscapes etc..but for portraits it may tend to slightly distort features ..
