What is the best lens (50mm) for my D7100?

I currently have the Nikon 50mm f1.4D which I absolutely LOVE! It can be found used for $200 - $250. AND....it is not a DX lens so you can continue to use it after you switch to full frame!

Oh, it was a very good plan, my wife thought I was brilliant by saving some money with that move.

Any thing we do to make our wives think we are brilliant just has to be a great plan.

Each has it's place, but I believe the OP wants info regarding choice of a 50.

For my enthusiast use and eye, I chose the Nikon 1.8 and I am pleased with my results. To spring for a 1.4 to gain 2/3rds of a stop would be a waste for me.

The 35mm 1.8 DX is a great lens-more versatile on a crop sensor camera than a 50mm.

Correct! That's because the 35mm on a DX is a 50 (52.5mm).

.....FF equivalent focal length.

It's still a 35mm lens.

Most any will serve you well as long as you work within their limitations. I have Older AF F1.8 & F1.4 versions as well as manual focus F2, F1.8 & F1.4 versions (all will meter in manual or aperture priority with the D7100 but nailing focus manually isn't easy using modern DSLR's when wide open)

I agree with Dave the Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8 G is the best lens for the money.

The focal length doesn't change, only the field of view....

I've had both 35mm and 50mm. Gave the 50 to my daughter for her D7000

I have both, and no question the 35 is much more versatile. For portraits though,I prefer my 50 or 85,depending on what I'm looking for,my point being I find all of them useful. I may have wrongfully assumed the OP was looking for something in the portrait category.

If the OP has a "kit lens",he can experiment with both focal lengths and that should aid in finding just what he's looking for. :-)

I have a D7100 & purchased a Nikkor Lens AF-S, 50mm, f/1.4G (That's what it says on the box it came in) Lens for around $200.00. It works beautifully. I am very pleased with it. I use it for portraits and some macro
