Is it ok to charge your own family for a thanksgiving group shoot? Do I give them the JPEG so they can make there own prints? Or sale them the prints and save the JPEG.
Welcome. It's your family. Do what you think is best for a happy holiday. Can't you just give them a finished photo and remember a special time without garnering profit??
I guess it depends on how the family gets along. If there is friction among family members now it won't make a difference. I you all get along now there will be friction after you bill them. In my case I guess I would only charge certain people as we already don't get along so well now :o) All kidding aside the holiday season is upon us so why not try to keep peace in the family.

No,I have never charged my family for any photos I have taken of them.😡
I have never charged anyone in the family for any photos that I took of them so they wont charge me for the many meals I have had at their homes.
I wouldn't charge them. If they are pressuring you to do it, and you really don't want to, go all Pro on them, do 20 or so poses, move people around, etc., etc. (Mean guy, aren't I?) Email or throw the images on disc for them -- post on Flickr. Otherwise, just get it done quickly, get bulk 4x6 (or whatever matches your format) at Costco, and deal them out. Spirit of Thanksgiving.
This is what my brother did last family gathering that we had. I did know of this was what he was doing tell on day he ASKED ME if he could take group shot at a adoption party I was having for the 5 &6 year old girls I had adopted. So he takes the shot. Three of them, sends me the photo and then he tells me that there is a copy right on the photos and if I want one it will run 200.00. Well I just spent 3 year in court fighting for the two girls and 30 k. He ask if he could take the photos and now he wants money. Come to find out he charged my mom 150.00 for last year Christmas photos. Guess what he wants to do on thanksgiving this year. So would you set in the shoot ?
Never had a brother. I would find what he did difficult to swallow. If I couldn't discuss it with him calmly, I would sit in the picture for the benefit of those in the family who wish to buy. I sure wouldn't pay for a photo. If I was feeling confrontational, I'd set up my D 750 on a tripod with remote and shoot a few bracketed 3 shot bursts for photos of my own. Might just process mine blindingly fast an give out prints free! Don't know anyone involved, IMO only, "no warrantee expressed or implied". Good luck!

It's ultimately your call, but do you really want to lower yourself to his level?

I charge my daughter every time she asks me for advice! So she never asks for any and I never give her any!!
But I just can't figure out how she has become SOOO successful and I'm still such a looser. I really want to ask her, but I'm afraid she'll charge me!!!
But hey, welcome to the Hog anyway!!! ;-)
SS
wow.... I don't even charge my friends for the shots I take. I would never dream of charging my family. How much are they charging you for the meal??? ;-)
