I'm considering buying one of these cameras. Looks like the 5D 3 would cost about a thousand more than the 6D. Is the 5D that much better than the 6D that it warrants an extra grand?

I plan on shooting still shots as well as sports. Thoughts?

Also curious if Canon is planning on a 5D Mark 4? If so when would it be out and how would this affect the price of the 5D 3?

Gratitude :)

I have both bodies. The 5D is, by far, my favorite. The focus system and separate CF and HD card slots make it a no brainer for me, not to mention the other features already mentioned.

Listen to the hoggers, I asked same question few years back. I paid attention and got the 5d mkiii. One of the hoggers used his 6d to test focus with BIF, 6d failed miserably. I shoot mostly sports and the 5d works flawlessly. Auto focus is superior. As others already said 7d mkii works right along my 5d and performs admirably. Iso performance is not bad on 7d mkii although not as good as the full frame 5d. I personally use the 7d more than the 5d because of the FPS. Up to 6400 iso images clean up pretty good too.
Listen to the hoggers, they know what they're talking about

I have a 6d and use it for landscape, birding just about anything and I have a few Canon and Tamron lenses i use with it--very happy but for everyday use I also have a Fuji Xt1 mirrorless and several lenses--I have attached a recent photo from Arches Nat'l Park taken with the 6D and a Tamron 15-30 wide angle

I'm not a gambler, but I would (almost) bet my life that there will be a Model IV.

Rumored to be coming out next year, along with a 6DII. My credit card is already starting to quiver! :-D

I shoot both the 5DMKIII and the 6D. For portraits and landscapes they are pretty much equal in image quality. The 5D has several features I really like, such as ability to bracket 5 frames instead of just 3, 2 memory cards instead of just one. Everyone talks about the focus system which is obviously better in the 5D (but unless you are shooting true action shots the 6D focuses just fine). I suspect there will be a 6DMKII before there is a 5DMKIV. I love my 5DMKIII for it's extra features...Not so much because the image quality is so much better. Of course for action shots you WILL get better image quality from the 5DMKIII. One thing the 6D has that the 5DMKIII does not is a true wifi capability whereby you can remote control the camera from your smart phone. I believe there is a way to do this with a 5DMKIII but it is not as easy as the 6D. I have not tried doing this with the 5DMKIII because the 6D does it so easily.

Ditto!! Totally agree. I have both. My sports camera is the 7d M II.
Good luck in making your choice.

The 6D is very stripped down in comparison to the 5D, if your passion is sports then the 5D is the better camera, I have the 6D and love it for landscape and night skys etc, but for sports and birding I made the investment for a 7D markII which you may also want to consider. Not nearly as good with high ISO's as the full frame cameras, but beats even the 5D for action shots, 10 fps and because of the crop your lenses effectively become much longer.

Yes; the 5DIII is a MUCH better camera for sports.

And yes; it is worth the money.

I'd go with the 5D Mark iii. It outshines the 6D in so many ways. I've owned one for over a year and i absolutely love it. I purchased the camera and lens at the Canon Store refurbed. Saved $1100.00.

I own and shoot the 6D, and the 7D Mark II. The Mark II is my "go to" camera for anything that deals with action. The 6D is the camera I "go for" when I'm shooting static subjects, like portraits, landscapes, and car shows. The 6D is marketed to be a entry level full frame camera, and it shows this level really well. But, it only has one cross point focus point. The 5D Mark III has I think 64. If you would go to www.canonrumors.com you'll be able to keep up with all the Canon rumored cameras coming down the line. The is almost daily mention of the 5D Mark IV, and the 6D Mark II, and others. Another good site is www.canonwatch.com, it is about the same as the rumors site, but sometimes a little better, with some video about the newest models. On both sites there will be clues on deals about the Mark III. Don't be to concerned about buying "gray market" just buy a add on warranty, or pay for service if the "gray market" camera fails.

In addition, the 5dIII is better on video (primarily because of the "moire" pattern problem in video on the 6D), and the Mark II is rated and reviewed better than both in Video.

I know many people are not interested in video in the least, but I would think ahead and consider the factor on value at time of sale. Potential buyers may factor in a price cut for the lesser quality video performance.

Canon already had the next generation of 5D and it's called the 5DS and it has already affected the price of the 5DIII. The 5DS is a 50 megapixel camera.

While valid as far as it goes, this view should also account for those photogs now and never interested in doing videography, and the market they constitute for a camera without videography capability. This photog assumes a market would exist for a camera, new and used, minus this function.

Besides, if this photog should decide to do videography, then he would buy gear designed exclusively for this purpose.

Enough said.
