I always try to buy refurb, but newer models aren't generally available refurbished. The warranty allows them to give you a refurb, rather than repair yours - same difference, with a faster turnaround. I seem to have heard about quite a few of this model needing repair, if that means anything.

A Canon refurb, versus just having yours repaired is the better deal, IMO. Canon refurbs are as close to new as you can get without actually buying new.

As good as new, including the one-year warranty. I have one with over 5,000 shots on it - use mostly for distant wildlife:

Most items are new that had issue with customer who just wanted their money back. It is a smart financial move depending on price.

I ordered the refurbished SX 50 and it constantly is clicking like it is trying to focus, I have to send it back, I hope the next one is better.

Refurbs are the closest thing to new that you can get.

I got a refurb SX-50 as a backup to my DSLR direct from Canon. It was only $179 and I can't tell the difference between this camera and a new one. Money well spent.

Yep.

Mine clicks too. I thought it was just trying to find focus?

Mine deleted all the pictures on the memory card, sent it back for a full refund. Good luck.

The two friends that bought refurbs, swear they are new. How can they check shot counts?

May not be available. I've bought a number of refurbs. Shot count has always been zero out of the box.

judging from the various reponses this subject of refurbs always brings, it is mostly safe, but a crap shoot.

My recently purchased SX50 refurb as far as i can tell, is fine

In the case of the SX50, they had a recall because the glue they were using turned out to be an eye irritant. So correcting this obviously didn't have any problems with camera in general. I guess thats why its still priced, as of this morning, at $150.
.
As long as one can get a refund or exchange i think its worth the gamble.
My next DSLR purchase will probably be a refurb.

(however a friend suggests that i shoot that SX50 enough during the next year i won't be bothering to consider another DSLR - that remains to be seen!)

In the past, it has not included a card. Now, a 4GB. Great deal.
