Jerry, you are correct. Removing a file from Dropbox does not remove the original source file from a local computer.

Why pay DB $10 a month when you can get flickr with 1TB for free?

Hi group,

I've been using the free version (2GB) of Dropbox for a couple of months and I'm pleased with it so far. I'm considering an upgrade to the Pro version (1TB) for $9.99. Has any of you used this version? Thoughts? Problems? etc.? Take care & ...

I use Nikon Image Space, (If you have a Nikon Camera you get 20gb for free ) I also have a WD 4 TB Cloud with additional 4tb drives in the rack. No need for Dropbox which uses lots of resources on your computer, even when you aren't using it. There are too many other cheaper options.

I have the "Pro" version- after tiring of the 2GB limit. For me, Dropbox is handy for uploading only once with an unlimited number of viewers invited to view. I also like that trusted others can add/delete contents of specific folders while the not so trustworthy can only view.
However, I find uploading to be both slow and inconsistent. Pasting 150 2MB files into a Dropbox folder sometimes finds 40 random "errors" that must be reloaded. Files over 5MB are sometimes difficult. I do not like the cumbersome file delete process. I've also experienced episodes where not all functions were available at all times. Still, it's a step above of Facebook...

I have used Dropbox Pro for a while now. I store many of my photos there for easy access, as there are Dropbox apps for most portable devices. Accidentally deleted files are easily recoverable.
If you transfer large amounts of data to your Dropbox, the background syncing process may slow down computers that have slower processors. Usually, however, the sync is not noticeable to the user.
Also, the Carousel gallery app available from Dropbox, provides an alternative view of your photos and videos that may be useful to some users.

I used to use dropbox, a few years ago. Then one day I noticed that the program had created multiple folders on my PC, and that some files were being synced to files in one, and some to another. I had no way of knowing where I should put a file in order to get it to their server.

I sent an email to them asking what was going on. Their reply was along the lines of "that's a very interesting question, but we don't have time to look at it..."

I removed all references to dropbox from my machine, and went to find someone who ran a more professional operation.

I use the pro version and share one folder with another person. Don't nt have any issues and like that I have access to my files and photos from any computer or device that has Internet.

Easy to use. Great for sharing photos. Not an issue with deleting what you did not want deleted. Ability to control who can access each folder.

No. From my limited experience, I'll put several files in DB and eventually remove them. They disappear only from DB.

I tested that just now. The file I removed from DB is is still in its original position on my computer.

Absolutely. Not sure of what the scenario of syncing means. syncing what!

If I have a file on my say C: disk and I put it into drop box, I now have two copies and they are independent. I can then erase either one and the other still exists. Just think of it as a C drive on you computer and C drive in the cloud(some other file system.

As for DB I only use it for ease in sharing pictures. It can be raw, jpg, tiff or any file with any extension. I do not use it as a backup device.

I shoot for a local newspaper and I put all the assigned shoots in a folder with appropriate file names. Beats the hell out out Email especially if large files.

I use the free version since I never go over the free space. I would imagine for $10 a month you get tons more space and maybe some bells and whistles. Non of which I seem to need.

Or $99/year. American Express has a special with Dropbox where you sign up, through AmEx link, with Dropbox and get $25 credited back to your account.

DB Pro has a very customizable syncing utility that allows you to sync virtually any directory/folder/file on your primary or any secondary drive(s) and then define the interval between syncs. Or you can set it to sync in real time. The sync engine is a very useful tool/utility.

Every instance where I have repaired DB sync issues for clients, friends, family has been due to a lack of user understanding of the utility, i.e., not bothering to read the DB sync utility manual(s) and not understanding the the core functions of the desktop DB application.

[quote=oldtigger]if you remove a file from drop box, does it remove only the file in the drop box folders or does it remove the file from all your folders, drop box and/or otherwise?[/quote

Adding, deleting or editing files and/or photos in DB will propagate through all devices synced to the same DB account. No files outside of the synced folders will be affected. Try it for yourself.

We use DB for cloud storage in a Humanitarian Org where we have multiple users. We have had some near misses. If someone deletes or corrupts a file somehow, that deletion/corruption will propagate throughout, so you need to have backup! On one occasion we were only saved by finding one synced machine that happened to be turned off at the time and was thus unaffected by the deletion. We then learned what we should have already known that we should backup all important files/photos outside of the synced folders, even separately on a non synced backup computer. In such a multi user setup like this, you be vulnerable unless you keep copies outside of the synced folders.
