I'm looking at less expensive alternatives for a cell phone. Who's the provider for Tracfones? In this area, Verizon has very good coverage. Other carriers, not so much.

I've had a Tracfone for years and have been very happy with it. In the U.S., the only place I've had trouble getting a connection is in my own home. That's not a problem - I still have a land-line at home.

As for saving money, Tracfone is a real bargain if you are a low-end cell phone user like me; I pay about $60/year myself. But I don't use it much at all really, it's mostly for travel and for emergency situations. I suspect that if you are in the habit of texting every twenty minutes or have a cell phone to your ear most of the day then you would be better off with some subscription service paying a monthly fee.

Tracfones are great if all you need is a phone and don't spend a lot of time yakking. No monthly fee, just pay by the time used, can recharge your minutes online or buy cards at grocery stores, etc.

When I moved to rural Maine there were no AT&T cell towers so my "Smart" phone was rendered completely stupid. I just needed a phone, and Tracfone worked great - they pay the other companies for use of their networks. I ended up spending maybe $8 per month on talk time.

I've got a TracPhone deal that I got at a Walmart and they call it Straight Talk. But I am sure it is a tracPhone set up. $40.00/month with unlimited everything they got on it. I looked at others such as the Smart Phones and I have no use for them and they are much more expensive. If I want to surf the web I'll do it at home. And if your in a bar for instance, and a question comes up noone knows the answer to there are a dozen (minimum) people there to pull out their expensive Smart Phones.

My son used a Tracfone with StraightTalk for a few years before he got his iPhone. It worked very well.

Every time you try to help someone, sombody comes on here with something they know nothing about. Like androids have to be used in your area, Tracfone uses Verizon's cell towers and others. depending on your phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy S5, I call and tex all around the United States. If you have a WI-Fi connection you use no data. I buy a card once a year 99.00 and it triples my Minutes and text and data. Yes you will be deactived if your time runs out. Try not paying your Phone bill and see what happens. So go ahead and use your Antique Flip Phones. I'm really enjoying my Smart Phone. I live in Cincinnati just talked to my son in Florida.

I like the BYOP idea, but TracFone isn't cooperating. I went to their site and tried to check the compatibility of my phone (Samsung Galaxy S5) by entering the IMEI. It just looped back to the compatibility screen without giving me a Yes or No. I guess I'll have to call them.

EDIT: My pop-up blocker was blocking the compatibility answer. yes, I can buy a $7.00 kit and use my phone. Two weeks left!

I see that it's with AT&T. That's a deal breaker.

[quote=twowindsbear]Does Verizon have a similar 'pay as you go' plan?

Yes it does. I looked into getting one for my mother many years ago. She seldom used a mobile phone. After reviewing the plan, I felt it was better to just add her to my existing plan. I would have still had to pay for activation, etc, and then additionally buy the minutes.

Page Plus and Selectel both use Verizon network. Page Plus has a plan called "the 12." A 3G only plan, but 12 bucks a month for 250 minutes, 250 texts, 10MB data.

Yep. I bought an LG android at PagePlus for 20 bucks. The only problem is when you need customer service, it can be spotty, but once you get set up it seems to work well.

I used to buy those $99 cards, but a year ago I got pretty close to the deadline so I called Tracfone to pay for another year of service over the phone. I got a better deal that way - they let me buy two years of service for $150.

I felt much the same until a few months ago when I upgraded to an Android smart phone. What motivated me to do that was that it could be used as an exceptionally good remote control for my A6000 (so long as I'm at a WIFI hot spot).

Not sure if it would work for you, we recently bought unlocked phones from Microsoft , $100.00 each , very similar features to more costly from T-Mobile, very satisfied so far, and we can use 2 SIM cards, considering trying a Consumer Cellular card next summer for our trips to the camper as T-Mobile is a bit spotty up there, Bob.

It looks like I may be able to stay with Verizon, my current phone, and TracFone, but I'll have to go to a store and do it in person.

jerryc41, That is exactly why so many people have given up on land line phones and use cell phones exclusively. I bought the cheapest (almost) Trackfone I could find for emergency use when driving or out in the middle of nowhere while taking photos, and I have not had any problems with this phone. You can buy as few or as many minutes as you choose (mine double) If you don't use them all they roll over. My phone was $9.97. No camera. I have seen them go for $5.00 or less. You can buy a card or go online to buy your minutes. I go online since it's faster.
