I can sometimes get a program started, but in the background I can see the screen continuing to recycle/refresh. It will not stop... ever.

And, I don't know what to do about it. I am probably going to go back to Win 7, which was rock-solid. I am totally regretting the upgrade to Win 10.

The good news is that the laptop is not my only computer. My desktop is primary for LR & PS & photo storage. So, I'm not desperate, but certainly very frustrated.

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Guidance? Well I'm staying with W7 just because of issues like yours. I'd advise going back.

For you folks that wish to wait, please do. Not know your computer skills you have nothing to lose should you have a problem. I know on the one machine I had a problem with Windows 10 itself told it was going to do a restore, and I know when it was restored, it was lacking some of the programs and devices. Do what you are comfortable with.

Hi Gitchigumi,
I had/have a similar problem with a Laptop of mine. It is an quad core i7 with 8Gs of memory. It is a Costco brand Cyberpower brand. The first problem was Win 10 does not have the drivers for the Qualcomm Atheros WiFi adapter in my laptop, so after the Win 10 install finished, I was not able to reconnect to the Internet via my wireless network. I went to the Qualcomm site to try to get drivers but none were available for Win 10 yet. Then the laptop display would come and go. I tried rebooting the system and it would load to a point and then just sit there with the "Gray Screen" of death, as I call it. If I just let it set for awhile, I might get my desk top to come up. I am pretty sure these are both driver problems.

After playing with it for a couple of days and not finding any new drivers. I Restored my Windows 7 configuration. It is quite easy to do. In Win10 go to "Setting", then go to "Update & Security, then to "Backup", then Restore Windows 7".

I will try to do the upgrade to Windows 10 again in another month or so and maybe the drivers for my laptop graphics adapter and WiFi adapter will be available. I loaded my desktop i7 with Win10 and it worked flawlessly.

Not true at all. Windows 10 is great if it has all the drivers for your hardware.

Yes, but you are very risk averse Jimmy. That is your personal choice, but you should also acknowledge that you are a very late adopter, and your advice to hang back is not necessarily the best for all others.

Many of these problems are very easily resolved. Not all, but the majority.

Remember, it is dangerous out on the streets, people get killed. It is far safer to stay at home and never go out, then you just have the risk of accidents at home to deal with!

I'm not trying to be mean, you are well entitled to your own perspective, but that is not the best approach for everybody.

Most of the problems people are experiencing with Windows 10 are user specific issues, or lack of knowledge. Then when things go wrong people start blaming Microsoft, the company is far from perfect, but has in fact done a really good job with this transition.

Many of the people on UHH wouldn't even consider trying to repair their own cameras, they pay the local shop or send it back to Canon, Nikon, Sony or whatever and pay the price. Yet those very same people seem to think that they can upgrade/modify/ or repair their computers which many know very little about, and yet are not willing to pay somebody else to do that for them. Then it goes wrong, and they start complaining that the software must be bad!

I do understand your reticence with Magic Lantern, it made me nervous, although now I have been using it without any problems for over two years on the exact same camera model that you have.

ML is however, an unsupported hack. Windows 10 is a fully supported product that Microsoft needs to be successful, they are very motivated to make it work well, and so far it is doing so surprisingly well if people are prepared to take a little bit of effort.

Take care....

I share your pain! I have 2 desktops running Win 7 that won't complete the Win 10 install and a brand new Desktop that came with Win 10 installed. Even on this new computer Win 10 is very quirky. I have been too busy to read some articles from PCWorld that mention uninstalling Win 10 and go back to what you had before and another dealing with common Win 10 issues. I think you may get some enlightenment from PC World and good luck!

Make all the recommendations you wish, but your advice is not accurate, nor is it good advice. It is merely ill informed personal opinion.

Windows 10 appears to be the best Microsoft OS yet, and the roll out has been surprisingly good.

Remember, there is not a single piece of software on the planet that is a finished product. There are always updates and improvements being made until the product is in 'end of life' status, and that doesn't mean that it is finished in the sense that there are no possible improvements, just that it is being replaced or left to die.

This is the closest to the BEST post I have seen on this post and others likewise. My ten experiences have been mostly flawless except for one Illegal 7, which I just reloaded an authenticated 7 and did the Windows 10. Actually that's this machine. 5 of my W10 installs are my machines and only had one Realtek audio driver that fixed itself in 3 days.

Otherwise I have done all the variations of installs and updates, and can only tell you two thing I think count.

1) That your machine be completely updated to the very last update before going to 10.

2) That you have run AV scans and MalwareBytes before the upgrade.

Last, if you are having problems, any, with the machine you are upgrading fix all problems first. Windows 10 is a new Operating System. It will not heal a corrupt or troubled machine.

Remember that XP cannot be updated, even by Windows 7 and 8. Windows XP was never programmed to allow an update. On the XP machines I have updated to 10, I have formatted the drive to clear XP from the computer, Loaded an authentic Windows 7, Done All the updates, and then directly updated to 10.

I'm happy with 10. Believe 10 is the best thing MS has done in years. I have been teaching and fixing Windows for 23 years now. This is the best it gets, and the array of machines I have placed 10 on are very mixed.... NONE New!

The previous advice to roll it back or wait is ill advised as mentioned. Just talk to the right people. Very few of them are here.

So can we presume you've not tried the upgrade yet.

This has been your only response a number of times now.

The information I have is not a personal opinion. My sources of Windows 10 not being a finished product come from professional IT publications. It was rolled out unfinished to have something ready in time for the kids to use when they went back to school. This is not a matter of updates. It is unfinished. Please check the sources that you base your opinion on.

Of course it's not finished. It never will be. There is no such think as "finished" software. There is "working software" which Windows 10 certainly is in a majority of the cases.

If you believe IT publications, you'd never buy any software.

Adobe never finishes any of it's software... why do you think there are updates on all their products.

Utility, Spyware and AV software is never finished, as long as there are hackers trying to get into our computers.

No Microsoft, and NO APPLE software is every finished.

Hell, your car is never finished. Ie, recalls.

The world is not perfect, and you may as well stay inside your cocoon for the duration.

Happily running 10 multiple applications and teaching it at the local college as well
