Windows 10 is a bust for me!

I was anxious to upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 on my laptop. The laptop has the horsepower and memory to handle it, so no problems there. And, the install seemed easy. Since then however, operational issues have made the system non-usable.

When first installed, Win 10 seemed to function normally. Now, it won't start completely. Upon startup, once it has loaded all the icons, it clears the screen and starts over. It's maddening! I can sometimes get a program started, but in the background I can see the screen continuing to recycle/refresh. It will not stop... ever.

And, I don't know what to do about it. I am probably going to go back to Win 7, which was rock-solid. I am totally regretting the upgrade to Win 10.

The good news is that the laptop is not my only computer. My desktop is primary for LR & PS & photo storage. So, I'm not desperate, but certainly very frustrated.

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm subscribing to this topic so I can watch for how going back to 7 works and if it works well!

I think getting to like Windows 10 is a long learning process. Like going to school, learning something new every time I turn in on.

Hi Gitchigumi
Your pose a question it seem vague first how old is the laptop how much memory is it 32 bit or 64bit how many old programs is it running has it been defraged did I clear out malware get red of old log files and so on. You get the point some prep work sometimes needs to be done in advance.

Welcome aboard! I am hoping that someone here will help me resolve the Win 10 dilemma, as I liked what I saw initially.

If I could do a clean install of Windows 10, I'd try it. But, I don't want to have to buy it. If I could somehow use the authorization code from Microsoft to download the software for the clean install, I'd try it.

My recourse will be to start over with Win 7. I Don't think I can "go back" to Win 7. So, I may just wipe the disk and start over. Nothing like a clean installation!

Or, and this is tempting, install a solid state drive, then Win 7 or Win 10, depending on whether I have pay for it.

Contact the Microsoft help desk on line or by phone, make sure you go to Microsoft.com and not the multitude of scammers out there.

The laptop is a quad-core, 64-bit machine with 8GB RAM. For programs, MS Office Pro, plus SolidWorks, LR, and a few others. There are no "old" programs. All software are current with updates. Graphics card driver, along with all other drivers, has been updated to handle Win 10.

I guess that is what frustrates me the most. There is something hickey with the install, I think. But, I don't know what it is, or what to do about it.

I had the exact same problem of the screen refreashing all the time with Win10 on my HP laptop same basic specs as OP. Went back to Win 7 and everything worked as before.

Couple of things to try here. Have you done the F8 boot menu, and chosen "last known good configuration?" If not, try that first. You then might try the repair option in the same menu.

Once you're back up, I strongly suggest making periodic system images. Either from the Windows backup tool, or a third party image backup. I use Paragon, and it has saved the bacon more than once. Bit to setup, but it's automatic after that.

Have you tried checking for updated graphics drivers / reinstalling them?

Also I'm pretty sure you can do a clean install of W10 once you have done the upgrade. You can download either DVD ISOs or USB memory stick install kits as well.

Finally there are options at boot time for safe mode and repair modes that could help.

Good luck.

I'm subscribing to this topic also. If it's been longer than 30 days, you might not be able to roll-back to Win7.
Good luck!

..now where did I put that popcorn salt?

Lots of good advice so far... Thanks to everyone! I need some time to try them. I am writing this on the laptop now. Upon startup today, it loaded pretty good. I was able to see the Windows 10 menu system, which is a good sign.

Then, that functionality went away, as has happened before. Clicking on the windows icon in bottom-left of the screen does nothing. Same with the Search box next to it... However, everything else seems to function OK. But, I have to access programs, like Outlook, "through the backdoor", as I don't have access to the Win 10 screen that provides the link.

And, I am well within the 30 day window. Maybe only a week or so into that 30 days at this point.

Oh well... standby and I'll report more, as I try some of these tips.

My recommendation to you is to leave on for a while, allow it to down load any updates that are out there. Mine was doing the same thing, I wouldn't even allow me to log in. I've had like 7 updates from them since. Each time more things seem to clear up a little better. I had to turn mine off by removing the battery (laptop) and hold the power off button the Desk top a few times.
