OK... Update... I found that I could reinstall the software and keep my programs. This action was available thru the startup screen to toggle the action center (my term). There, I could ask the OS to check itself, which it did, with no problems found.

So, I then asked it to reinstall Windows 10, which it did. However, even though I requested that it keep all programs, it did not. There was a lengthy list of software that were not retained. All my Adobe software, for example. Other software, SolidWorks, as an example, appears to have been retained.

Windows 10 does appear to be working, though... Time will tell, as I now need to do the setup steps and then reinstall at least some of the software.

I will provide an update later as to status. Hopefully, it will be to advise that all is well!

Have you tried checking for updated graphics drivers / reinstalling them?

Also I'm pretty sure you can do a clean install of W10 once you have done the upgrade. You can download either DVD ISOs or USB memory stick install kits as well.

Finally there are options at boot time for safe mode and repair modes that could help.

Good luck.

Me too. I am watching all the Win10 topics and will judge when, if I change, though I will buy a new computer before the 'free OS' runs out.

Well, for you two fellas, I'm just a retired old fart who took the jump on six machines at home. One had not been turned on for over 4 years and was a Windows 7. That machine was a bear to do. It took three times. I had brought it up to-date with Windows upgrades. The Antivirus proved to be the killer. I had to go to Avast and down load there removal program. After that it was a piece of cake. Yes there were some minor bumps. Mostly caused by out of date Drivers, mouse. But as far as I'm concerned as a user, there like new machines. Where is used to take a life time to boot up *4mins* now takes less then a minuet.

There are some bumps and grinds as you go along, but I have found that for the most part they tend to mend themselves.

A few days ago, I got an update. You know, please wait while we set up your computer. When it did come up it told me I was a "Temporary Users" LOL.. no icons, no nothing I Could use. I rebooted and it's all there. The choice is yours, but I find it's well worth it.

I still can't install it on my Win8 machine, so I'll stick with that. The older Win7 machine accepted it.

I was anxious to upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10 on my laptop. The laptop has the horsepower and memory to handle it, so no problems there. And, the install seemed easy. Since then however, operational issues have made the system non-usable.

When first installed, Win 10 seemed to function normally. Now, it won't start completely. Upon startup, once it has loaded all the icons, it clears the screen and starts over. It's maddening! I can sometimes get a program started, but in the background I can see the screen continuing to recycle/refresh. It will not stop... ever.

When are you Windows folks going to learn and switch to a Mac?

And, I don't know what to do about it. I am probably going to go back to Win 7, which was rock-solid. I am totally regretting the upgrade to Win 10.

The good news is that the laptop is not my only computer. My desktop is primary for LR & PS & photo storage. So, I'm not desperate, but certainly very frustrated.

Any advice or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

In my years on WIndows experience, I learned that if a problem can in anyway be blamed on a flaky video driver, that's probably the case. Since the problem you are having directly relates to the video display, that where I'd look first.

Thanks for your advice, James, but I did all the updates before installing Win 10. And, there were several Win 10 updates that happened afterwards... So, everything is current.

Today, I've rebooted many times. Some while trying to enter the Safe Mode... Worked like a charm on Sunday, didn't work at all today. Just saw the window flash by with no time to react. Finally got it going through a backdoor command set. But, it did me no good... And, to top it off, I couldn't get back out of Safe Mode! Finally did, but it was frustrating.

Now, it seems that I am in never-never land. The re-install process, even though I requested to KEEP all my programs, proceeded to DELETE all my programs. So, now I have a Win 10 system with no software installed. So, do I reinstall and hope for the best? Or, go back to Win 7?

And, there is a 30 day window where Windows will allow to roll-back to Win 7. I thought I was within that window, apparently not. I had downloaded the Win 10 update a few weeks ago (apparently more than 30 days ago). So, even though I just installed it, the timer had already begun with the download. Fortunately, I have the Win 7 recovery disks..

And, at this point, I think I am going to re-install Win 7... But, I may go ahead and get a SSD first. Prices on those are coming down nicely. And, I'd like the speed.

I really liked Win 7, I was used to what it did and how it worked. I was not all that comfortable with Win 10. I think I made a mistake in trying to migrate to Win 10. :-(

Thanks... I was really hoping to have the great experience that many others have reported. Unfortunately, my case was likely the odd-one, the anomaly, if you will. Oh, well... it was not for a lack of trying.

Why are so many "Hogs" jumping into Win10, why not wait until all the nuts and bolts are tightened by others who feel that they have to have the newest first. Let them fixit for us. Like most of us wait to purchase new Cameras much after the release to have others go through the pains, returning for repair and or loading firmware to correct manufacturers racing among each other to be the first

My 2 cents

Anyone who has installed Windows 10 I would recommend reverting back to their old operating system. Microsoft admits Windows 10 is not a finished product with the remainder of the OS to be released in a couple of months. There are just too many bugs to make it worthwhile.

I have installed Win 10 on 4 Machines, one an Asus Transformer. All work fine. I could not disagree more strongly. With win 10 installed on millions of machines it is not surprising that some problems appear. Very upsetting to those having problems, but it does not mean that Win 10 is a failure. Recently my notebook, after running win 10 just fine for a month, refused to boot. I suspected memory trouble so removed one memory module. Worked fine. Reattached the USB3 hub and it continued to work. Shut the computer down it refused to complete bootup. Detached the hub, restarted the computer and all was well. Strangely, I moved one USB cable to a different port on the same hub and that seems to have resolved the problem. An identical seven port hub on my work machine has had no problems. I doubt that any of this has anything to do with Win 10, it just shows how complicated a minor computer problem can be.
