Your problem is that Windows 10 has a photo app that automatically brings photos into it. When I loaded Windows 10 I had an option NOT to use this app, which is what I did. Then I could add images the same way I did in Windows 7.

You are not the first person to have problems with getting pictures into their machine using Windows 10. Most of the problems I've read are those concerning people trying to do it from camera to Windows 10. Now you are the first one that I've read going from a card reader to Windows 10. I have not seen or used Windows 10 but I've read nothing but problems. I'm almost inclined to say, without ever seeing Windows 10, that they are trying something new like Mac with their new picture viewing/editing program Photos. If that is the case, then images aren't put into folders, they are put into a catalog that may or may not contain folders. I may have to go to Best Buy and see if I can make sense of Microsoft's new operating system.

I would suggest that you not make generalizations about a subject that you obvious have little knowledge of. It is not helpful. I have Win 10 running on 4 computers with few problems, and certainly not this one. I think that you have managed to open one of the included programs which is interfering. Try creating the receiving folder and then copy your files as you are used to doing. I think that may help. I have when exploring files with the "File Explore" clicked open when I meant to click "open with" which was not what I wanted to do. In general I am finding Win 10 a stable and easy to use system. Will take a bit of getting used to but worth it.

Thanks for all your input. I'm sure I'll be able to work this out without the help of my grandson that lives in Florida. I'm up by Mt Rainier.

I upgraded my laptop a month ago from win7 & have had zero problems. I upgraded my son's gaming machine yesterday from win8 and it runs like a top. Win10 is very stable and user friendly. The problem described in this thread is a simple matter of setting up the default configuration.

I also upgraded from Win 7 Pro 64 bit to similar Win 10. No issues - very stable & smooth. However, I know of disastrous attempts as well. I love Win 10. Most minor issues can be remedied easily. May take a couple of Google searches or investigating via the former Control Panel, "Settings"

I have always inserted my SD card into my laptop, selected photos, then dragged them into a dated and named folder that I then put in my main photo folder with all my saved, dated and named ones.

Windows 10 would not allow me to do this. At least I couldn’t figure how to. It loaded thousands of my stored photos into a new program that I didn’t understand. Is there a way to simply drag and drop photos from a SD card into folders with Win 10?

I managed to use Win 10 otherwise, but my photos are one of the most important uses of my laptop. For now, I went back to Windows 7.

As you can tell, I’m not a computer wiz. Back when my grandson was in elementary school he taught me how to use my first one. He is now married and I have a Great-granddaughter. Time flies, but I’m still not that good with computers. So I need help.

And yes, I back up all keepers on CDs or DVDs and an external memory.

Prior to Windows 10, I was on Windows 7, prior to that XP, and prior to that Windows 98. I can do what you want to do without any problem at all.

You may need to investigate how things are different, but using File Explorer (aka Windows Explorer or File Manager in previous Windows versions) I can see right into the file systems and pictures on my camera connected via USB, or with a card reader should I wish to do that.

You may have firmware, driver, or software problems, but this is most likely not a basic Windows 10 problem.

As others have suggested, it is probably just setting up the appropriate associations, software and learning that although it is a little different, you can still do what you want to do.

That's my choice for my Mac as well. Sometimes I choose to do nothing even if the computer is turned off.

Ah yes, "Sometimes I sits and thinks, and sometimes I just sits."

I use Fastone. I put SD in slot, click on FS. It loads all pics on card then I select the ones I want put in a folder. Usually I let the computer create a folder(I rename later). This works with my card reader too. I'm happy. As you may know, Fastone is free and depend on donations.

When I insert an SD card, it asks me what I want to do. So mine is set to start LR.

I have Windows 10, and essentially nothing has changed. Create a "Computer" shortcut icon on your desktop. Insert your SD card into its reader, and close any applications that pop up asking you to load your new files into it. Click on your "Computer" shortcut icon to display the entire list of drives on your PC, then click to select your SD card. Simply drag and drop your photo files anywhere you like, or open them directly into your application of choice.

Here! Here! I was waiting for a post from someone with a positive remark. We have two laptops and I have an old 32bit desktop from 2005. All of them are running 10 without problems. As Lupin put it, use your windows file manager. It does work. I have been using Lview Pro for a long time and it still works fine in my Windows 10 machines. May as well get used to it. It's here to stay.

I have two desk tops running Win10; Pro on one and Home on the other.

Used every version of Windows since "Windows for Work Groups" and 10 is the most trouble free and customizable so far.

Like all new programs it takes a little time to become familiar with it.

I upgraded (downgraded) a Dell OptiPlex from Win 7 pro to win 10 pro and my built in card reader did not work. I use CF, SD and MS cards regularly. I found that the drivers do not exist for win 10. So I upgraded back to Win 7 and all is well.

All you really had to do was place the windows 7 driver installer for your card reader on your Windows 10 desktop. Right click on the installer and then use the menu options to have the driver install and run in Windows 7 compatibility mode.

Would have taken you a couple minutes to make Windows 10 run the driver in compatibility mode. Sorry you had to waste a lot of time reverting to Windows 7. Was a completely unnecessary thing to do and a big waste of time.
