I have always inserted my SD card into my laptop, selected photos, then dragged them into a dated and named folder that I then put in my main photo folder with all my saved, dated and named ones.

Windows 10 would not allow me to do this. At least I couldn’t figure how to. It loaded thousands of my stored photos into a new program that I didn’t understand. Is there a way to simply drag and drop photos from a SD card into folders with Win 10?

I managed to use Win 10 otherwise, but my photos are one of the most important uses of my laptop. For now, I went back to Windows 7.

As you can tell, I’m not a computer wiz. Back when my grandson was in elementary school he taught me how to use my first one. He is now married and I have a Great-granddaughter. Time flies, but I’m still not that good with computers. So I need help.

And yes, I back up all keepers on CDs or DVDs and an external memory.

You are not the first person to have problems with getting pictures into their machine using Windows 10. Most of the problems I've read are those concerning people trying to do it from camera to Windows 10. Now you are the first one that I've read going from a card reader to Windows 10. I have not seen or used Windows 10 but I've read nothing but problems. I'm almost inclined to say, without ever seeing Windows 10, that they are trying something new like Mac with their new picture viewing/editing program Photos. If that is the case, then images aren't put into folders, they are put into a catalog that may or may not contain folders. I may have to go to Best Buy and see if I can make sense of Microsoft's new operating system.

I wish I could help.
:-/

I was using Lr before Win10 and nothing changed when I went from 8.1 to 10.

I'm going to keep an eye on this thread, just in case when I want to do something different, I know what to/not to do :-D

You can do this in Win 10. Go to the Task bar at the bottom and click File Explorer. Locate the column on the left and find "This PC" and click it. Navigate to your SD card and click the icon. Find the files that you would like to move. Now go to the menu at the top and click File to open a new window. Find the destination folder where you want to move your files. Go back to your first window and drag the files you wnat to move to the destination folder. It should work... The new program is probably the Win 10 default app for viewing photos. You don't have to use it.

Thanks. When I return home next week I'll re-install Win 10 and try that. Not as simple as now, but sooner or later I'll have a new laptop with Win 10, so like it or not, I should get familiar with it.

When you pop your drive into the usb slot it will come up with a list of options as to what you want to happen when you insert a usb drive.
You can also select what happens when you plug in your usb drive by going to: Settings / Devices / Autoplay --> choose Autoplay Defaults ...

Thanks for your input. With Win 7 after inserting my SD card those options came up. With Win 10 every photo on my memory card automatically went onto the new photo program, no other option. And I couldn't find a way to drag the ones I wanted into a new folder. Or any other way to put them in a new folder. When I reload Win 10 I'll try all suggestions.

I always select "Do nothing," since I prefer to make the choice myself for the particular disc or card.

I have Windows 10, and essentially nothing has changed. Create a "Computer" shortcut icon on your desktop. Insert your SD card into its reader, and close any applications that pop up asking you to load your new files into it. Click on your "Computer" shortcut icon to display the entire list of drives on your PC, then click to select your SD card. Simply drag and drop your photo files anywhere you like, or open them directly into your application of choice.

I upgraded my Dell laptop to Windows 10. When I load pictures into the laptop, I put the SD card directly into the PC. When I do that I get a popup asking me what I want to do. I install the pictures onto the PC using Picasa. I haven't had a problem.......yet!

You need your grandson or grand daughter's help. It is easy to disable that photo program that comes with Win 10. First thing I have to do with every computer I have purchased in the last 15 years. They all come with a raft of junk software. You should be able to see and manipulate every file on your SD card.

Microsoft has discovered what Apple figured out years ago. Most people want a computer that doesn't require thinking. So they now give you stupid programs, like the Mac, that handle images and sounds and games. But you don't have to use them.

I use all my old programs on Win 10. I now have five machines running Win 10 and not a glitch in any of them. (Actually number 5 is an Acer desktop I just got for my friend and set up. It's really fast and capable for under $500 from Costco.)

I've not screwed up my courage to install Windows 10 but I'm working on it.

However, I have a work-around that I can suggest. I never have much liked drag-and-drop file management because there is so much possibility of dropping the files in the wrong place; all it takes is a tiny slip of the hand.

A better way (IMHO) is to select the files you want to move and hit CTRL-C to copy or CTRL-X to move (alternatively right-click with the mouse and select either copy or move from the menu) and then go to the destination folder and hit CTRL-V (alternatively, right-click and select paste from the menu).

Oddly enough, you will probably be asked at some point by Windows whether you are sure you want to move or copy the files. More oddly, this never happens with the much more error-prone drag-and-drop approach.

This not a Windows 10 problem it is a matter of understanding that you can and always could change the default photo viewer in the Windows OS. This where a web search engine comes in handy. Search term: "Change Windows Default Photo Viewer"

I won't write another whole step by step tutorial and I'm not trying to be an ass but the answer to this issue has been answered. Here's a straight forward step by step tutorial for changing the default photo viewer that works with every version of windows for the last 15 years or so:

Just a guess, but is there a software update for the camera? I always use a memory card reader. I find it much easier and convenient.

My guess is a driver or reader problem, my main machine had the same problem in Win7, certain cards would sometimes not work with the built in reader, solution use a free (from a vendor at PhotoPlus) external reader, now Win 10 on the same machine is doing the samething, same solution, Bob.
