As a second camera, I'd try to go m4/3 - personally I'd skip APS-C, might as well get a Sony A7II with the 24-70 f4 - you'll get a better sensor.

M4/3 is pretty good and can be much smaller with amazing lenses.

Hi Bob ! Yeah, I gathered that you're looking at a Fuji for the purposes you describe. That's why small and easily manageable lenses are important, and the 18-55 will certainly fit the bill.

Just wanted to point you towards Damien Lovegrove, ex-BBC cameraman and now Fuji X-Photographer. There's lots of stuff available from him to help, including this short video about the X-T1 and X-T10 which appeared just the other day .....

Thanks Geoff, I'll have a look at that. I know that there are plenty of people who have ditched their DSLR gear for Fuji though I just want to get this right for me. I don't want to end up with more gear to leave at home because it's still too big to take out.

Thank you for your thoughts Thomas. That is a terrific image - did you use the OM1 for that?

Well, today I almost crossed the great divide and bought an XT-1 but at the last moment I hesitated and ended up walking out of the store.

My everyday camera is a Canon 5D mk3 and I am the owner of too much Canon glass. Mine's a familiar story, I don't always take my camera with me because it's too heavy and so - no camera no photos. So I decided to buy a Fuji XT-1. I did some research and decided that I'd buy just one lens, not too wide and not too long, after all, this was to be a back-up camera not a replacement. I decided that the 16-55 f2.8 would be a good all rounder so I saved my pennies and by today I had enough of them. So I went to my local store, I handled the camera, thought it was gorgeous, fell in love with it there and then - love at first sight! So what went wrong? I asked the assistant to replace the 18-55 lens already on the camera with the 16-55. Suddenly the cute little Fuji becomes a monster camera! That 16-55 is almost the size of the 16-35 that sits on the end of my Canon.

My question to you Fuji users is: what is your everyday lens? Do you stick with the 18-55? Perhaps you use a prime. Do you have the 16-55 as your only lens?

So, Fuji X users, which lens should I buy?

I use a CF 16-50mm. this kind of a dirty secret in the Fuji world. It is very inexpensive and absurdly light. all the reviews claim the IQ is indistinguishable from the 18-55mm. it is in my subjective opinion superior to the Nikon 18-55mm. Mounted on an X-E1 I have used to make 16x20 prints that look as good as any from my D7100.

By the way, If you mostly photograph subjects that don't move much the X-e1 or E2 is more than adequate and even smaller, lighter and cheaper than the T1. I've had good luck buying Fuji gear used. It you want to try the system on the cheap combine an X-e1/2 withdrawal a CF16-50. The sensor is the same as the T1 and the differences are mostly held and whistles.

Funny, I just had almost precisely the same experience at my local store. Went in to look at the XT-1 as an alternate to my Nikon D750 for the same reasons you mentioned and thought the XT-1 was beautiful but really not a whole lot smaller than the D750 once the lens was on. I left empty handed and a little disappointed but did a little more research and ultimately opted for the X100T. It has received stellar reviews and is already regarded as a classic I think. It will be a different experience than the D750 or XT-1 but I'm looking forward to playing with it.

I just bought the XT1 and some Fuji lenses and am very impressed. I use the Fuji 10-24 and the 18 to 135 the most. Smaller and lighter than the Canon 6D I was using. Just ordered an adapter to allow me to use Canon lenses on my XT1. Stay tuned for how much I use it. The autofocus on the the Fuji is amazing, I think you would like it.

Hi

I purchased my Fuji from Craggycrosser, then went on to purchase the 18.-55 and the 35mm prime, then went further and bought the 230mm.

Like you I am tired of lugging my big heavy D810 and D300 on holiday and days out etc, I love these cameras and what they can do of course.

My holiday luggage is now lighter and I really enjoy the quality and handling of the Fuji.

It was my intention to go over completely to this lighter set but am reluctant to give up my Nikons.

My advice is go for it, you will love the quality and feel, along with the excellent results. Just look at Craggycrossers flower pics.

Well, that flushed you out Geoff, knew I'd hear from you mentioning the XT-1:lol: Anyway, thanks for your input but as I say, I'm not trying to replace my Canon gear I just want something small and manageable for walking around with so it's just a camera and one lens I'm after. I think the XT-1 ticks the boxes with the 18-55 lens but I'm also going to have more of a look at the Olympus OM-D E-M1.

Anyway, great to hear from you my friend and hopefully we can meet up sometime soon. All the best.

Regardless of brand, many people get a smaller camera just because it's smaller. Adding large lenses ruins the whole effect. I like the Sony RX100 series because I know I'll never be able to buy lenses for it, and it will always fit into my pocket.

EDIT: Let me add to that. This past week I was at a time lapse workshop with an advanced Canon user as an instructor. He does a lot of traveling, and hauling the heavy Canon gear gets tiring, so he got a micro 4/3 system. Even with several lenses, it weighs a fraction of what the Canon gear weighs.

Good luck with the switch. I binned 40 years of Nikon bodies and glass two months ago. I'm happily rediscovering how much fun photography can be, unencumbered by a shedload of kit. The new baby is a humble X30.

I moved from a Nikon D-7000 over a year ago to a Fuji X-T1 and love it.

I have a 'kit' 18-55, and it's a great lens.

It can do everything my Nikon did and more.

I have the Nikon D750 and a full kit of lenses and speedlights. I bought a used Fuji X-T1 and the 18-55 lens as a second camera for when I don't want to carry my Nikon kit. I quite enjoy having it and my wife uses it regularly when she wants a camera. Just remember, the IQ will not be as good as your Canon kit and there are restrictions, especially at the extremes but it is more than adequate as a second camera or a first camera depending on what you shoot.
One consideration you might want to take is to add a 27mm F2.8 pancake lens as an additional alternative for when you really do want to lighten your load. It takes very little room and and is not that expensive.
Good luck with your decision.

I use the Fuji X-Pro1 with the 18-55,35 1.4,and the XC 50-230. The 18-55 f2.8-4 is an outstanding lens and has excellent IQ. It balances well with the XP1 and I would think it would do as well on the XT-1. You can buy used mint Fuji lenses for a fraction of the cost of new and you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. All of my Fuji gear is used and works flawlessly.

I'm a landscape photographer, and had similar problem with my Nikon D800 and Holy Trinity of pro lenses. Every time I tried to photograph my family, or do some discreet street photography, the big rig sent people heading for the hills. My solution was the Fuji X100s ! For me, it's the perfect mirrorless solution. I found that with a little leg work, the 35mm f2 equivalent lens does everything I really need.
I'd love to buy a Sony A7 MkII, but unfortunately I'm not at this point, willing to invest in a whole set of new glass.

Just tried using "T" and the front dial and it works in S, C, & M. Great little upgrade. Thanks for mentioning.

The Fuji X-T1 is a fabulous camera, so is the X100T as someone mentioned. The X100T is a fixed lens, however. You could not go wrong with virtually any of the Fuji lenses. I personally like the 16-55mm f/2.8 and the 16mm f/1.4. The 56mm f/1.2 is great for portraits. the 50mm-140mm f/2.8 is comparable to many of the top DSLR 80-200mm lenses. Sorry I could not be more specific. Fuji makes numerous high quality lenses. Initially, you just need to pick one that fits your style of photography and then add on in the future.
